Whatever size or resolution you put in, it's all 720 x 480 pixels (DV resolution) when it comes out, generally speaking. Although there are just a few footnotes to that.

1) Although, technically speaking, DV is 720 x 480, there is an issue having to do with square and non-square pixels. It's a little complicated but the upshot is that the full-screen dimensions for a photo should be about 650 x 480. (Trust me on this, not matter what else anyone tells you. Better yet, experiment and you'll see.)

2) You do have to take resolution into consideration if you plan to use pan/crop to zoom into an area of your image. The area you will eventually zoom into must be at least 650 x 480 or the image will break up. In other words, if you're going to go from a full-screen image to a zoom in to an area that's about 1/2 of the picture, you'll need to have an original image of about 1300 x 960 pixels. Make sense?

3) Getting back to my original point then, there's no point in loading an extremely high-res photo into your movie unless you're going to do a lot of zooming in. You won't get a clearer picture in the final movie. Remember: Whatever the resolution, you're final output will still be 720 x 480.

Actually it's 654.545454... x 480. I usually use 654x480 but 655x480 will work just as well. These values are for NTSC. If you're in PAL-land then use 787x576 instead.

That being said, please ignore it. Use any size you dang well please and Movie Studio will make it fit. If you go to Pan/Crop, right-mouse-button click on the frame, and choose Match output aspect (does movie studio do this? i don't have it installed right now) then the picture will be sized and cropped so that it completely fills the frame. Now what could be simpler than that?

Well, I just had to find out if the right-mouse-button-click thing worked. And it does! (Is there nothing this software can't do?)

This little tip is going to save me a lot of time in the future as most of my work these days seems to be working with pictures and slides.

Thanks...

WOW!!

That was not only very quick response time, but in the process of answering my newbie question, you both answered questions that I didn't know I had (yet)! Thank you very much!

I've been 'lurking' for a few weeks...reading through a lot of the previous threads, trying to get up to speed. I'm sure you must hear this often, but I'll say it again...this forum contains a wealth of information, and a lot of good people steering us in the right direction.

Many thanks,
Ron

Without mentioning any other popular editing software out there -- isn't it nice when a product forum is mostly about tips, tricks and how-to-dos instead of bugs, challenges and technical frustrations?

Not that this or any product will be completely free of those. But they are rare and usually quickly resolved so that we can all get on with the business of making great videos!

Because i thaught that the picture i used this time i scanned in at only 96 do

When you render your movie, do you have the fast video resizing option checked? I found that when I unchecked it that the flickering went away. The time to render the movie went up dramatically too.
