Using Mocha Mesh tracking results in Vegas Pro 22

Robbo wrote on 7/29/2025, 5:38 AM

I have Mocha Pro standalone 2025 and can create mask tracking as provided by Mocha training videos " Introduction to Mocha essentials" set of tutorials, lessons 13 + 16, (all free from Boris fx. )

However, I cannot find a way to successfully use /import these tracking results in Vegas Pro 22.

I wanted to do a basic video by using Mocha's mesh tracking on a Tshirt, then add an image on the shirt so it is affected by the mesh track so the image "sticks" to the Tshirt as it moves/wrinkles.

Please note the video has occlusions which have been masked out ( see Lesson 13). My Mocha mesh video performs as expected, just can't add the image successfully. If I try to add an image, it shows on top of the occlusions (arms and shadow), not sticking to the T shirt.

Note. In Mocha, the layers are in the correct order, the Tshirt is the lowest layer.

I cannot find the finer details of how to interact with importing this type of data in Mocha or Vegas tutorials. The usual suspects, AE Fusion etc. seem to be catered for.

It would be appreciated if anyone could direct me to tutorials or instructions to achieve this effect.

There is a forum post with links to lots of excellent BorisFX tutorials about how to use Mocha Vegas in Vegas Pro 21:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/boris-fx-has-created-super-comprehensive-content-for-mocha-vegas--142102/

... especially:

I understand that not long after the introduction of Mocha Vegas, a connection between Mocha Pro OFX was implemented - but I've not used it myself. However, Mocha Pro OFX is used directly on an event on Vegas Pro's timeline, something which does not occur with Mocha Pro SAL (which I don't have so can't check it out).

Based on the tutorial, if you can't locate in Mocha Pro SAL the link to Vegas Pro as exists in Mocha Vegas/Mocha Pro OFX, you'll likely need to render the Mocha Pro project in Mocha Pro SAL and then import that render into Vegas Pro.

Mocha Pro SAL bundles Mocha Pro OFX, which can import the tracking data from SAL (Mocha Vegas does not support many advanced features, such as mesh tracking). But then you might as well do the tracking in Vegas using the OFX

Thanks MikeS.

Sorry to possibly mislead, I mistakenly said I had Mocha pro stand alone (SAL) but I have it as a plugin for Vegas pro. I have followed many of the tutorials but none, using Mocha and Vegas pro, seem to fit what I want to do.

Just to reiterate, the Mesh tracking is ok in Mocha.

When in Mocha, I can add an image and it renders out in Vegas but the image stays on top of the occlusions. This may be a Boris Fx issue, I have had no response about this from Boris fx as yet.

The other problem (Vegas?) is that there does not seem to be any detail on how to import that mesh tracking "data/info" from Mocha into Vegas pro so I can then use it to attach an image to the T shirt, when back in Vegas. This is so I can change images within Vegas pro without going into Mocha every time.

Maybe see if this tutorial from Scrapyard Films about using Mocha Vegas/Vegas Pro is of any assistance:

Thanks for taking the time, however, the example is not what I am after. It is not straight forward

tracking objects to add objects to clips.

Its adding images to faces or fabrics so the image moves as the face or fabric moves and wrinkles.

I have tried uploading a file that may help but looks like it is stuck "uploading".

You cannot import mesh track data into Vegas. Vegas has no idea what mesh track data is.

But why would you want to, when you can get Mocha Pro to do all the work? For what you are trying to do you actually want to use Mocha as a custom compositor rather than a video fx, Basically, make the track you want to insert the compositing parent of the track you want to insert into. Now select Custom as the Compositing Mode for this track the one you just made a parent (confusingly, do NOT use the 'Parent Composite Mode"), and choose Mocha Pro. This should then start the Mocha interface, do tracking (including mesh) that you need to do. Then in the Insert tab select "Insert Layer" as the insert clip, And if you want the warp mesh to be used during rendering, tick the Powermesh Warp box.

Now exit back to Vegas and return to the Mocha Pro OFX dialog. Expand the Module Renders section, tick the render box (since we want Mocha to do some work here ...), And change the Module to use to "Insert: Composite"

And that's basically it.

(you'll probably want to mess about with opacity and blend modes as well, but that's all fairly standard stuff)

Well the above video uploaded Ok. It is very basic but I hope it gives an idea as to what I want to achieve.

The "Logo" sign in the video above was input within Mocha. I saved it and, using the basic Mocha options that stay open in Vegas, it rendered ok in Vegas as in the video above.

The Mocha logo in the video above should be under his arm and stuck on the T shirt and move as the shirt does (Boris Problem).

The Vegas problem, at least for me?

There needs to be further steps to be able to insert a .png of my choice on a track in Vegas and have it influenced by some sort of process that uses the Mocha mesh tracking data. This will make the image move with the surface of the fabric/face.

I do not want to have to open Mocha every time I need to change the image on the same clip.

MikeS,

we seemed to have overlapped our entries. I sent mine before yours arrived. I will give your suggestion a go and report back when I get a chance.

Does your option still stand after seeing my last post?

Yep, my option should address "insert a .png of my choice on a track in Vegas and have it influenced by some sort of process that uses the Mocha mesh tracking data. This will make the image move with the surface of the fabric/face." It should also honour any with any holdout mask you may have set up in Mocha (since it is Mocha that is doing the compositing)

There is one additional step in Vegas: when you drop a new png onto what we should now consider the insert track (i.e the compositing parent described in my previous post) you will need to Copy the video events from the existing track and paste those events onto the new track, this just ensures it is all synched up with Mocha. You then need to move the new png to where the original png is (if that makes sense; it does in my head)

thanks for staying with me on this and appreciate your time to help me out. I will give it a go when I get a chance.

MikeS, had a go but no success. I had a bit of trouble understanding some of your instructions:-

"Basically, make the track you want to insert the compositing parent of the track you want to insert into. Now select Custom as the Compositing Mode for this track the one you just made a parent."

I need a bit of clarification please:-

The parent track (1) will be the track that has the main clip into which I want to insert the image?

The image I want to insert will be in the lower child track (2)?

When setting the parent track 1 (main clip) to Mocha pro custom composite, the clip is no longer visible in the Vegas viewer or in Mocha Pro therefore, it cannot be tracked.

It seems that selecting the Mocha pro custom composite track option, on any track, clips are no longer visible in the Vegas viewer or in Mocha?

Not sure where I am going wrong, any further guidance please?

Regards.

@Robbo This is one of the easy process you can follow in achieving your end result.....

Thanks Steve,

I tried this stabalize method and it seems to work ok. I can change images on the Tshirt within Vegas by copying and pasting selective items from the Mocha tracked clip into the new image.

However, I am still interested in the Mocha custom track option suggested by MikeS.

Still need to have Biris fx find out why oclusion masks are not being held out, making the image appear on top of the arm and not on the Tshirt. Awaiting response.

Thanks all.
