Using MS with DSR-40

Anyone using MS with Sony DSR-40 DVcam deck? I can't get the program to print to tape. The machine controls are okay but after I hit the print to tape button the file does not transfer. All I get is black to the tape. I needed to print a 2-hr long program to tape. I was going to print to DVD but both MyDVD and ULead DVD Factory does not allow changing the compression setting to fit a 2-hr file onto the disc. Any suggestions?

I don't know anything about the DSR-40, but Rejig might help with the extra compression.

That's quite an impressive piece of equipment to be using with a $100 piece of software!

Nonetheless, from what I could glean on the internet, it should work with the DV connection.

Can you input/output to/from a standard MiniDV camcorder? Have you been able to use this recorder with any other editing program on your current computer?

This should help eliminate a couple possibilities.

Yes I can capture from it fine but printing to tape does not work. I have used D8 camcorders with my computer and they work fine both in capture and print. With D8 I am limited to only one hour of tape time.

User error involved here. Forgot that the DSR-40 has input selection and it was set to non-DV input. I still want to know how to compress DV-AVI to MPEG-2 that will fit over 2 hrs on a DVD. I tried Canopus Procoder Express to convert the AVI to MPEG-2 with a 2-hour quality selected but the final video quality was terrible.

I has the same type of problem with my Sony PD-150 camera. When I would print to tape it came out black. For me the trouble was simple, I had the camera in record mode, when I switched it to play mode everything worked out fine. I don't know how the dsr-40 is set up but I hope this helps I'm looking to purchase the DSR-11 soon. Good luck

If your AVI was generated by MS, render your project to MPEG2 instead. If the AVI is from a source other than MS, pull it into MS as an event, then render it to MPEG2.

Unless I am missing something here, it would appear that you simply need to output the project from MS using the MPEG1 encoder and adjust the settings for 120 min input. The quality will be reduced somewhat but it will go on a dvd. I do this with Ulead MF3. Just set it up to output to your disc and use the settings for mpeg1. MPEG2 is not adjustable with MS3 so you can only put a 60 min program out with MPEG2. Don't feel bad about the switch problem . Once you have it on the disc, then you can input that file to Ulead program and on to the dvd. I use a Pana DV2000 and there have been many times when I sit there looking at a black screen until it hits me that I have left the input selector on one of the analog inputs.
