using my editing computer for everything

tonyatl wrote on 12/23/2008, 7:44 PM
I have been using two computer one for anything online and one for vegas 8 and ps.
Its a pain and want to use my editing rig for everything. I have winxp pro, intel e8400 , 4 gig of ram and 4 hds. If im rendering would doing stuff online and having to add antivirus etc make a difference on times. Would adding a quad core to the mix help?

i've been using one comp for ~4/5 years. no issues. Just get a non-obtrusive AV (I use Avast!) and you're set.

You can speed up render times if you get a faster CPU...I just upgraded to a BOXX computer; www.boxxtechnologies.com

Coming with the new Intel i7 3.2 gHz chips and 6 gb DDR3 Ram, It is running the 64 bit version of Windows XP Professional. I also added the MOTU PCIe 424 to operate my MOTU 2408 and it sounds amazing.

My render times have drastically reduced! Check them out.

I'd recommend a multi-core if you don't have one too.

When I *NEED* to do something & there's rendering, I disable the first core from Vegas & let another app use that. Very handy.

I also have "only" one PC - and when I render I set the Vegas priority to below normal - then it humms along in the background using all 8 cores up to 70-80 percent but I do not notice it at all in my other work (i.e. editing another project in the foreground). BTW: the pagefile is on a separate partition.

One question to Digitalelf: does the Vegas Plugins like Neat, NewBlue, Cartooner, Boris FX etc and Virtual Dub work under XP 64 ??

Hello Ritsmer,
I would like to comment about those plugins, but I do not use them. What I DO know is that the new computer is blazingly faster than my original self-built one. If you are really interested in upgrading to a faster computer, I suggest contacting those plugin companies and ask them.

Merry Christmas, Michael

I use mine for multiple tasks - while rendering - I'm doing most of my rendering in 8.1 and have XP64 as an OS which allows more than the 4 GB limit of a 32 bit system. It's a Q6700 running 3.33Ghz with 8GB of RAM and 3 drive sets (RAID 5 plus 2 single drives). No problems multi tasking. A quad makes a big difference - if you motherboard is compatible with them you can pick up a Q6600 or Q6700 for under $200. Overclocking the FSB to 1333 with either of these will give you a very capable and fast machine on most current motherboards with very little tweeking. Just make sure you have enough cooling if you overclock to keep the CPU below 62c when fully loading all 4 cores.
