using overlays, screens, and such without affecting the restof the project. how?

okay i want to play around with the options of overlay, saturation, and such on that button to the left of the track properties. the only problem is that it affects the whole entire project if i do that. so i have been using tranparacy to do ghostly effects but i want to do other effects. is there a way i can use these without affecting the rest of the tracks below it.

Vegas supports a unlimited number of tracks. Once you do any of the track composite things controlled from the track header the tracks effected are "set" so you need to break the rest of your project into event and move to different events to new tracks.

> INSERT > VIDEO TRACK - Place several video events on a new track - now you can apply Event specific effects or Track specific effects.

OK?

Oops... What am I missing here?
I just "finished" a video last night that I needed a watermark on a section of. So I built the project, then, over the area I needed the watermark, I placed a layer with a logo. Above that, I placed a Text line with the web address. To both of these tracks, i used Screen Apply Mode and about 57% opacity. But now the entire project plays at about 18fps due to the above tracks being composited. This applies even to where the the watermark isn't seen.
So, say you have a 10 min project; you have the watermark - or something you want in a different composit mode over the middle 5 min; Won't this mean the begining and ending will also have to suffer the composite modes even thought there is no need for them to?
The only way I can think to keep this as close to real time (not needing renders) is to put that 5 min segment below everything else and create several more new tracks above that??
I'm a bit confused... What am I missing?
