Using SD Clips in HD

I need to insert several 4x3 SD clips into a 1920x1080 video. I want to place them on the timeline and hold the 640x480 resoulution. In other words, a picture in Picture-In-Picture. That I can easily do.

My question...how do I keep the SD clips at 640x480. When I place them on the timeline, they automatically "stretch" vertically to fill the frame. I need the SD clips to occupy 640x480 pixels of the 1920x1080 video.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Wow, that's one of those things I thought I knew...

From experiment just now in Vegas 10e (64-bit), the following might do what you want. Please feed back on this if you try it.

1) For a given Event (clip) on Timeline, open its "Event Pan/Crop" dialog.
In there, under Position, the Width and Height are by default that of the Source media (e.g. 720x576).
2) Change these numbers to instead reflect the Project media size (e.g. 1920x1080).
3) Also ensure "Maintain aspect" and "Stretch to fill frame" are enabled - because e.g. the latter also acts as "shrink to fit frame", which is what I think you want, in a weird sort of way, i.e. "leave pixels alone so it stays relatively small in project frame", but I'll leave it for you to confirm the quality is as expected.

Not as elegant and automatic as I'd like, and if Project size subsequently changed then would have to remember to similarly alter each Pan/Crop (of each such Event).

Is there a better way that I've missed?

That's pretty much the best way to do it.

It does seem confusing that "Stretch to fill frame" must be enabled. Judging by the name of the option it seems very backwards.
