I'm currently editing a project that is completely made up of raw MP4's from my Sony F3 and not having any issues. What is your mp4 from? I'm assuming it'll play for you in VLC or the like?

Yes it plays in windows media player. I may have screwed with my codecs to the point of being in codec hell though. Going to try to reinstall codec packs and see if that clears it up.

Thanks,
jab

NEVER install a codec pack on a Vegas computer.

Installing a codec pack is taking a shotgun to your installed base of codecs in the PC when you really only need one. What happens is that codec packs overwrite the superior codecs from Vegas with inferior ones. The worst offender being K-Lite codec Pack.

OK Steve, so once the damage is done, how do I go back? Please don't say new profile for windows. Surely there is a way to manage the codecs to get the right ones working.

SOLVED!

I found a codec manager from NIRSOFT that allowed me to look at all of the codecs installed and enable or disable them individually. I disabled 2 XVID related items and vegas now opens mp4's without crashing.

thanks for all the help!

Glad ya tracked it down and seems like Nirsoft would be worth checking into for anyone that's fallen into the trap of installing codec packs. Been there myself, don't recall how I finally fixed it but I do remember banging my head against the table trying to figure it out. For me at least, I seem to recall that is was much more complicated than just simply trying to uninstall the pack, once installed they can defiantly be a bugger.

Actually don't think it would be a bad idea for anyone who's having problems with Vegas crashes or other behavior to check this out just on the off chance that this is the root of their problems as well.

Well done Jab.

Glad that you found the problem codecs. Xvid/Divx never have played well with Vegas.
