V15 NVEC/QSV 5.1 audio bug

bitman wrote on 9/2/2017, 6:07 AM

Rendering with 5.1 audio using the new magix nvec GPU or QSV HW accelerated templates does not allow to select 5.1 audio, nor customized. I am not happy about this, but so be it, there may be a pure technical reason for this or licence issue I do not know.

What I consider a bug, is that rendering this out a 5.1 project (movie clip with original stereo sound with added music sound track) results in the music sound track being gone from the rendered mp4. The stereo sound (without the music) is still present.

I would at least expect the 5.1 project to come out in stereo (as the template forces you), but with all sound in it, including the music track sound

Can someone confirm this bug?

By the way V15 plays this 5.1 project in the timeline correct with all 5.1 audio.

I do not have this issue when using older templates that support 5.1 (like sony AVC...) in V15

Could you share a screenshot of your timeline or a project file (with or without media)?

Marco. wrote on 9/3/2017, 3:02 PM

I have a guess. Set the pan type of all your audio tracks to "Add Channels" and try again.

Here is a screenshot.

The pan type was already set to "add Channels"

So the music you added and which disappeared in the rendered file is "crimsonTide.wav" in track # 3?

I see the surround panner of this track # 3 is set to be routed to the rear speakers only. Maybe the stereo downmix made for the render process is that kind to simple drop the rears.

If so and if you only output stereo I would just set the surround panner of track # 3 to the front speakers.

According to your screenshot I setup a similar project and I can repro the issue. This not only happens when rendering to Magix HEVC, it always happens when rendering that kind of project to stereo, even if it is uncompressed AVI, MP3 or Wave.

But I still think this is kind of expected behaviour where a downmix without rears is used (one of many variants doing compatible downmixes).

What you need to do is in the Surround Master Mixer enable the button "Mix Output" (see screenshot below). This ensures all channels are used for the final stereo downmix.

Thanks Marco, learned something new, use the button to down-mix output. I guess it makes sense. My intend was to use a 5.1 audio test I had from the past and test the HW NVEC or intel QSV acceleration to produce hw accelerated rendering to 5.1, but as this does not seem to be supported in the new Magix NVEC or QSV codecs, I was under the impression it would down-mix automatically to stereo (without enabling the down-mix output button).
