V17 crashing when importing more clips

Laci-Kobulsky wrote on 10/4/2019, 9:14 AM

I am experiencing constant crashes when I try to import more clips on the timeline. Attached I am sending the problem report and also SI file about my computer, I am working with the latest version. I had this problem with V16 in the past but I tough it was because of my old PC, but now I upgraded and this should work in my opinion. Basically anytime I try to import more files on my timeline (working with clips from GH5 or Mavic 2 drone) program crashes. I tried going multiple ways, import smaller sections to the different project, create proxy files and then merge them but eventually the crash occurs. I tried multiple settings in Vegas but no luck. Please if you have any suggestions I would be happy for your help, since I need to work on this project asap. Thank you a lot

create proxy files and then merge them but eventually the crash occurs.

Can you explain further? The crash occurs with proxies only, or after you return to the source media?

What is the file format of the proxies? (Vegas internal proxies?)

I don't know why you are seeing the crashes (media & GPU issues are typical guesses) but as you are in a hurry, I think transcoding to a different format may help.

It happens with any bigger project also in the past. I just want to try to resolve the issue now because its becoming real pain and obstacle. It happens when I try to import too much on the timeline, but in my opinion software should handle it, not more than 1 hour on the timeline. It happens with internal proxy files and without as well.

@Laci-Kobulsky

I guess you didn't quite understand the point of my questions. That's OK, but without SPECIFIC DETAILS, we can't help.

So, please list:

1) Specifications of GH5 and Mavic footage.

2) Project settings

3) specifications of proxies you made (unless internal - those are known 720p xavc-intra.)

Sorry, here we go:

1/ 2.7k and 60fps .mp4 files and 8-bit 1080p from GH5, but this happens with any project regardless the type of the footage I think

2/ I tried various, same issue, even with default

3/ yes internal, in media pool I select all clips and right click "create proxies"

As a point of reference, I have made many projects with GH4/5 mp4 h.264 UHD clips without issue, even with 100's of clips on the timeline. You didn't specify if the Mavic clips are h.265 - if they are that could be a problem. (In future: Better to show a MEDIAINFO report for full details. Free utility. Google it. )

In any case, if the main "symptom" is crashing when you add too many clips, then the system is being overloaded and the first thing to try is "lightweight" footage. Traditionally, I have used cineform files for this, so I recommend you do a test. Render some apropriate number of your original clips into cineform avi files (1080p, medium quality for now) and load them on the timeline of a new project. (You can use Vegasaur to automate proxy building - or some other utility like Intertake.)

ok will try that, but either way I need to find the long term solution that would work for me..
