When using import media to select a group of .jpg's to import into my work, vegas stops responding.
Does it crash, or just freeze for a bit? Does waiting a while work? Sometimes when selecting large groups of media, you have to wait a bit before it imports them.
JPG files are more compressed, thus taking longer to decode.
An identical batch of PNG conversions should import much faster. Scaling them down to fit your project resolution will also help.

It froze for a long bit and I waited longer than usual... but by the time I'd found my login here and posted my dilema it had "unfrozen." Two things - the sheer number of .jpgs and working to and from my network server - had just bogged everything down. The .jpgs for my timelapse are 4000x3000 so it's gonna take more time than I was giving it.

Thanks for this tidbit. I'll see if GoPro version I have supports .png and try that next time.

It's still not your fault, if you touch the mouse button or press a key while Vegas is processing the files on import it shouldn't cause a crash. Also should be a better indicator that Vegas hasn't crashed and will respond after it's finished processing your files.
Can have 2 different scenarios, one like yours where Vegas will respond eventually, just don't interact with it during the time, and the other where Vegas will never respond, but also it hasn't fully crashed, it's only when you try to interact with it that it crashes. The outcome is completely different yet appears identical while waiting.
