V23 I'm having the strangest bug...

Mindmatter wrote on 9/19/2025, 6:17 AM

So here's the situation:
I created a png of a text event and have it on a track set to "compositing mode multiply " to have the negative text effect with a video underneath shining through the empty text.

All good, works fine. I have 4 of these in total. Now this happens: Only the first one gets cut off to black at alwas the exact same spot, although nothing at all happens anywhere else. Then again, it sometimes plays OK, but in the render, it's always cut off.

This doesn't happen wirh any of the other ones. So I tried muting track after track above to see if anything was interfering with that process, and what I found was this:

The uppermost track has a masked black generated media to simulate the 1.85:1 aspect ratio black bars. When I mute that track, it plays fine and the png event isn't cut off anymore.

But it gets weirder:

I then exported the png event as an intermediate prores 422 of all the 4 composited events to avoid any potential conflict with the compositing mode. But now, when exporting the whole timeline, Vegas just creates a black where the prores event is. Again, only the first one.

I've never seen anything like this. Does anyone have an idea what I'm missing or what is going on?

Thanks!

This is driving me NUTS!
V23 simply won't render this particular 8 second event. It plays just fine in the timeline playback.

It's the same kind of prores 422 as 4 other clips, but on every single render, V23 creates a black where that event is. The render of this project takes over 1,5 hours, and each time it's a lottery if the clip is in there or just black 8 seconds.I've tried 5 times now.

If I had hair, I'd pull it. What the hell is going on here??
This is the clip in question, it's 239 mb:

It gets weirder.

So I did some tests:
Render clip alone. fine

Render starting 10 seconds before with the clip: fine

Render starting 20 seconds before with the clip: fine

Render starting 30 seconds before with the clip: fine

Render starting more than 30 seconds before: BLACK

Muting tracks above and underneath: BLACK

Creating an additional track on top of the whole timeline and putting the clip there: fine

So something somewhere is interfering with that clip, but when other tracks are muted, there is nothing that could possibly interfere. And again, all the other prores clips render just fine!

Also, V23 sometimes takes like 30 seconds to just show the 422 clips in the preview. They sometimes just show black and then show up after a while when the cursor is on them.

Make it make sense....

Can we get the project and media? I really do appreciate the media upload; it would be good to exactly copy what you are doing.

I made a sandwich with X-AVC S media before and after (1 minute of media before)

Then I did a render of the loop region with MagixAVC with NVENC.

The render was normal. Please help me test this the way you are doing it.

I just did a complete new entire project render with the clip in question as a first upper track. V23 rendered a black again. I thought I had the solution but it didn't work.

This is just one big question mark.

I'll see when I can make an archive export for an upload. Probably this week. Thanks for trying to help!

In the meantime, I found a workaround solution:
I rendered the whole video as a prores 422 internediate, edited the missing 422 clip in and rerendered to AVC. This works.

So the problem seems to be that V23 cannot, for some reason, render this clip when it's mixed with other XAVCI and H265 events in the same project.
