V23 shows only black frame when opening pan/crop

Hi all
I just loaded a few older renders to remaster, AVC HD videos. When I open the pan/crop window, I only see a black frame on all of the clips. Project settings are the usual and correct.

EDIT: When I split the clip in 2, the first half remains black, the second now shows the actual video frame. Very weird!

Any idea what's going on here?

No idea. A screenshot might help trigger something in my one remaining brain cell...

I've opened past videos editing in VP20-22 without issue going to Even Pan/Crop.
