Using Excalibur & V4 for making Multi-Part transitions and FXs.
For those presently using Excalibur with V4. If any of you are doing this already, apologies, if you aint lower the lights and remove any small furry cuddly innocent animals - kidz included here! - Brain Damage Warning . . . . don't say I didn't warn you . . .
I've been experimenting within XCal [ eXCALibur ] to make fast tranni effects at every "dissolve". Presently XCal will not make a discreet call to V4 trannis. It handles dissolve, and that's that. I wanted uptempo complex fx transitions. I've just completed and successfully at that, to implement multiple V4 Barn Door trannis. At this point in time I can't see why not using ANY V4 trannis fxs wouldn't do the same. Come to that any Presets I design too!
So here goes:
1 - Firstly, and this IS the golden nugget or approach, regard a Fxed track or Dissolve track just as another Camera Angle in MultiCamera Wizard.
2 - Copy a track that you want to use as the Fxed/Dissolve track - hey you could choose output from another camera and mix it in with this too! - Now name that new copied track B for Barn Door - you could call it anything you want. XCal uses the first letter for its track call. This helps me to know where the hell I am! - It's gonna get messy - trust me on that one!
3 - Using "Barn Door" tranni on track "B"arn Door. Make a split say 2 or 3 frames into the clip. So you now have 2 parts to this clip. Section1 = 2 frames long Section2 = The of the rest of the clip barring say 2 frames at the end of Section2.
4 - Now streeeetttch the whole of Section1 clip over the Section2. - okay the wise ones have sussed me now ;-) ! ! ! ! Yeah?
5 - Now place your "M"arkers. I do this to the beat of the music. Presently I'm doing the dance sequence of a wedding. Very upbeat - George Michael's "If yer wanna do it - do it right, right!"
6 - Go to XCal and do the multicamera Wizard thing as you would normally with MultiCamera Wizard
7 - I now get not just the plain vanilla Dissolve BUT also the Barn Door tranni! On the beat and for the full duration of the tranni. Yes the tranni lasts for the whole "length" of the XCal insert so there is another tweak that gets around this and makes for even more ease.
8 - Okay, Barn Door going on for too long? Then make note that you must at this point return to the untampered original i.e. not the copied and Barn Door track/Camera. This you can set up with a NON D option by forcing a NON D in the Markers Edit View List. OR you could go back to the T/L and slip in another Marker.
In Summary:
* My point is that using XCal in conjunction with V4 allows us to have greater control and ADD even more creativity into our work.
* With practice I/you can make some seriously complex and spectacular fffassst moving whizzy trannis/Fxs by implementing XCals multiCamera Wizard as a means to greater flexibility
* Just remember: Another Camera for MultiCamera Wizard DON'T just mean another camera angle. It could mean the SAME angle but has had a transition [ other than Dissolve ] OR any FXs you wish.
* I can also see the option to have repeatable P/C working. This I need to test. I'm not sure at present whether I can make a splitted section apply its P/C activity over such a short distance when XCal MultiCam gets going!
* Yes, I know ALL of this is potentially possible within V4 without XCal. BUT think about maybe 50 or 60 edits and adjustments AND you don't like it. With XCAl and MultiCamera used in this way, it is only a UNDO click away and you've got back to where you were! No loss in time. No loss in creative flow. AND your progressive approach is not made to falter or stumble.
* XCal does make splits in the underlying tracks. This is what it does. My advice would be to get to grips with the Edit Detail View spreadsheet and make your primary set-up options here. This way XCal can be "UNDO"ed and your underlying set-up is not split.
I'm very excited by what this means. It might not aesthetically work for every type of project. But I'm looking for a very uptempo section, akin to the Music Video rapid fire stuff. There maybe many many other ways you could apply this FX track as the other Camera angle. And of course we aren't limited to just one additional FX track. The possibilities are endless . . .
Okay, initially this maybe be thought of as "Brain Damage" but I also think with several attempts there will be those amongst us that will use this approach to produce some amazing stuff.
I would like to sincerely thank Edward Troxel and Gary Kleiner for their patience over the past 48 hours. Ed for his patience and attention to detail that I often lack and Gary for his . . candour . . .and his feedback on Edit List view feedback. Thank you both very much.
Apologies for the long post, but I couldn't, wouldn't wanna sit on this too long . . . I can see the potential . . used with a light touch and a creative and artistic "flair" we could all be onto a winner. oh yeah nearly forgot . . . and to BB for again exhibiting my unabashed enthusiasm <BIG wink ;-) >
Grazie
