hi,

in my VV3 manual, there is a chapter for a tutorial and sample projects. my V4 manual doesn't seem to have this? i downloaded the V4 sample projects, but they don't seem to have the documentation like VV3 does. am i missing something here or is there no longer a tutorial available for V4? i never had much time to use my VV3, so i want to learn V4 like it's a new software i've never used.

thanks.

no one has any suggestions for a newbie getting started with video editing and Vegas 4?

There are numerous sites that list projects and samples. This thread lists many of them:

New Vegas web site portal

Some of the sites listed there include:

I was in the same situation and I just used the tutorials from V3 under V4. They all worked fine. They don't go nearly far enough though...

On a related note, I've been frankly puzzled by the lack of books on Vegas. I realize it's a narrow market, but it's a very deep one - not that many people need the info but those who do need it, REALLY need it.

Hmmm, I downloaded the pdf manual and printed it out and put it in a 3 ring binder. All 350 pages of it. Add that to help forums like this one and many others, plus free online tutorials, etc, and yeesh, more info than most of us can absorb! I've never had a question or problem in vegas that I wasn't able to find an answer to.

On the other hand, I agree that initially I felt sort of in the dark with the software when I first purchased it. Printing out the manual so I had it as a hardcopy reference really helped. But like you say, vegas has many levels, more than are covered by 350 pages of manual, and the only way to really master the program is to tinker, tinker, tinker, and then go tinker some more.... :^)

jeh,

"I've been frankly puzzled by the lack of books on Vegas. I realize it's a narrow market, but it's a very deep one - not that many people need the info but those who do need it, REALLY need it."

A lot of Final Cut Pro books are showing up on the book shelves now. Numerically, I wouldn't think that would be a huge market either. Apple must be doing something to encourage the publication of those books.

I remember way back when Photoshop 2 was being replaced by Photoshop 3. At that time there wasn't much public awareness of Photoshop, but somehow Adobe encouraged the publication of a flood of books on Photoshop 3. It was a bootstrapping sort of thing. People saw all the Photoshop books and thought Photoshop must be the bitmap editor of choice so they chose Photoshop and then they bought the Photoshop books.

There is a lesson for SoFo here. Find a way to encourage the publication of Vegas books. (And ACID books and Sound Forge books). Even when the books aren't selling, just having them on the shelves provides advertisement and image. The more titles the better. Include specialty titles like "Make your Own Music Videos with Vegas" (Premiere has such a title, and it's a good book, including such esoteric items as tips for finding good western shirts for your performers.)

Bookstore denizens are well aware of Adobe's Premiere and Apple's Final Cut because of all the books on the shelves, but most people "out there" have never heard of Sonic Foundry or Vegas. I don't know all the techniques Adobe and Apple used to "bootstrap" the publication of all those "third party" books, but Sonic Foundry should do some research in this area. Incidentally, I think SPOT has a Vegas book coming out soon. But now we need lots more titles to get the "spotlight" on Vegas to keep the ball rolling. I think there may be several potential authors right here in this forum.
