V5.0d will not render to MPEG2

Mahesh wrote on 4/7/2005, 2:40 PM
My PTT problem persists. I was advised to upgrade from 5.0b to 5.o.
Now I cannot render to MPEG2 - PAL DV template.
The render stops at about 130 to 140Mb with an inderminate error.
The project is a straight 1 hour captured AVI.
The AVI is fine and I prosume hardeare is fine because it renders in V4.
Should I go back 5.0b which alowed me to render to MPEG2 or 5.0a which allowed me to render to MPEG2 and did not give me PTT problems?

Some may say, wait for V6. I am not so sure!!

Well I found a similar bug yesterday on the audio side, trying to render to a Wave. It rendered alright, it just rendered a blank data file. Mine seems to be hardware related, using Dual Echo Gina cards with Vegas 5.0d. I don't remember seeing this on previous versions of Vegas and recently updated to 5.0d 3 weeks ago. I'm gonna go back to v5.0c and see if that fixes the problem. It seems they added some stuff in v5.0d and broke a couple other things in the process.

Hey Mahash, I've also got a mpeg 2 bug going on - we talked on the cow site.

Just out of curiousity you wouldn't want to give me your pc specs and what software you have running do you - our problems seems very similar - maybe it would help to troubleshoot?

Here's mine:

Intel mobo with Intel 845 pesv chipset
Intel p4 2.4 proc
1 gig of Crucial ram
Antec 430 watt Truepower power supply
bunch of internal hardrives

Windows XP w/Service pack 2
Vegas 5d
Acid 4e
Soundforge 5
DVD Architect
Photoshop 5 and CS
Adobe After Effects 5
Ulead Cool 3d Production Studio
Ulead cool 3d 3

I think thats probably all the relevant stuff, I've got Trueimage and Firefox etc but I just can't see that doing anything. Good luck,
Yoyodyne

Hi Yoyodyne
Do you get the feeling that we are the only 2 usersin the whole Vegas community experiencing these problems? As you have noted, no help forthcoming.
If Vegas is a software application, why should different hardware/OS should make it non operational.

My system is
Computer 1
ASUS P4PE mobo with Intel 2.4 GHz CPU
1Gb RAM
450W PSU
SB Audigy Sound card
Hitachi 250Gb Video HDD on a removabale Caddy

Windows 2000 pro with Survice pack 4
Vegas 5.0d
Acid (do not use it)
DVA 2 (do not use it)
DVD Workshop V1.3
Dazzle DVC 2 hardware MPEG2 capture card

and
Vegas 4 - a life saver
This PC has problem doing PTT and with V5.0d, no MPEG2 render

I have another PC
with Asus P4B mobo
Intel 1.7GHz CPU
500Mb RAM
Hitachi 250 Gb video only HDD in a removable caddy

Clean install of Windows 2000 SP4 in separate partition
Vegas 5.0b
DVD workshop V1.3

No other software.

This PC exhibits same PTT problem as PC1 but
because I have V5.0b, MPEG2 render is fine.

Our problem is no one else is listening!!

Are you rendering MPEG2 with two-pass checked? Try clearing that, and see what happens.
Mahesh wrote on 4/8/2005, 7:34 AM
No Pelladon.
I always render with CBR. So answer is no, two-pass is not checked.
The settings / templates have not changed - only change is upgrade to 5.0d.
pelladon wrote on 4/8/2005, 7:53 AM
Only other thing is make sure you uninstall any "extra" codecs like DiVX and Xvid. Or other MPEG2 codecs and/or DVD "players", if any. Those have definitely caused problems.
Mahesh wrote on 4/8/2005, 8:07 AM
Thanks Pelladon, I donot believe I have additional codecs that amy create conflict. As I said, the renders worked fine before upgrade from 5.0b to 5.0d. There have not been any other changes.

I assume that you have not run out of disk space on any of your disks. If you are short on disk space, this would cause the problem.

Also, run Scandisk on each of your disks (right-click on the disk drive in Explorer, choose Properties, then Tools, then Check Now. I would recommend checking "Automatically fix file system errors," even though this requires a re-boot to finish the scan. The reason for running scandisk is that if you have file system errors, then space available on the disk may get mis-reported back to Vegas and cause it to get confused (other applications too).

Can you click on the Custom button when MPEG-2 is selected in the Render As dialog? If not, check out this thread which fixes a known problem that can screw up the Vegas MPEG-2 render:

MPEG Custom Button

Thanks John. Your input is really appreciated.
Disk space is not a problem. I can render to MPEG2 to same disk space using Vegas 4.0. I can also capture to that space without dropped frames.
I checked the registry. It has 3 entries
CurrentKey:xx
InstFlags: Reg_DWORD : 0x10
Key1: xx

'Key1' has the same registration code as 'Currentkey'.

Could that be the problem?

rs170a wrote on 4/8/2005, 11:25 AM
You may have stumbled on something there Mahesh. Your registry comment (Key1: xx) reminded me of a post I had saved.
The following comes from jetdv's Vegas FAQ page. HTH.

Mike

Look in your registry, and make sure it only has these entries, and nothing else.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARESonyMC MPEG Plug-In1.0License]
"CurrentKey"="XX-XXXXXX-XXXXXX-XXXXXX"
"InstFlags"=dword:00000010

(you shoud see letters and digits instead of the Xs here...)

If it is not "CurrentKey" or "InstFlags", get rid of it.

Edit: I just realized that John Meyer linked to the same page.

Hey guys - this is interesting. I can't find mine in the folder that is pointed to by john - I did find this in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/SONY MEDIA SOFTWARE/DVD ARCHITECT/1.0/LICENSE....

In there I have:

Default
Currentkey
Instflags
key 1
LastValidMachineCode

...and both Currentkey and key 1 are the same number...does this mean anything?

Thanks a bunch for the help!

If the registry doesn't work out, you might try breaking the project into segments and rendering each. My thinking here is that there is a particular media file or type in there that's breaking things. Breaking it into parts might help you figure out where the problem is.

I just finished a project and rendered to MPEG2 with V5.0d. I had DV-AVI, PSD, and PNG files. No trouble with the render. Could it be that something like Quicktime is broken in your install?

...and I also have a one in this path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/SONY MEDIA SOFTWARE/VEGAS/5.0/LICENSE....

here is whats in it:

(Default)
AppGrade
AppGradeDemo
Currentkey
Instflags
key 1
key 2

...I'm a little anxious to start nuking stuff out of the registry.....does this mean anything to anybody?
rmack350 wrote on 4/8/2005, 12:03 PM
It's good to be wary. Before nuking those keys, export them.
Mahesh wrote on 4/8/2005, 12:21 PM
I have just looked at the reg settings on another PC. This PC has 2 partitions with 2 W2k operating systems. Partion 1 has V4 + internet all othe rjunk one needs. Partion 2 has V5 and DVD workshop only (no DVDA2)

Both registries have this extra line Key 1 : xx etc which is the same as reg number as 'CurrentKey'.
So it appears to be a valid entry - unless someone can tell me otherwise.
(Could this be because there are 2 applications,V4 and V5?

rmack350
The project I tried was a straight AVI, captured from DVCAM machine. It was captured as client wanted a DVD made. So no mixes or edits.
It was straight AVI - to - MPEG2.
pelladon wrote on 4/8/2005, 2:34 PM
Assuming you did just a update, do a complete uninstall, reinstall of Vegas.
rmack350 wrote on 4/8/2005, 3:12 PM
Damn! Strikeout!

xjerx wrote on 4/8/2005, 3:25 PM
I had the same problem with that version. An error would come up sometime during the render saying there was some kind of problem. It does this about three times..and the on the fourth try of rendering..it goes all the way throught. It's strange. This never happened until I updated to 5.0d

do you remember how far along it got? Mine seem to be coming in at a consistant file size. My tests with m2t always seems to crap out at 240 megs or so.

Pelladon
I uninstalled Vegas 5.0b and installed 5.0d. That was the advice on this forum.

Yoyodyne
Mine conks out at around 140-150Mb.
Oh by the way, what did Sony support say. I filed the problem with Sony support today.

Mahesh wrote on 4/19/2005, 5:46 AM
With everyone preoccupied with V6 release, may be this may not be of interest. I have just found that using PAL DVD template,
If I render as VBR, render's fine
If I render as CBR, the render stops around 5000 frames with inditeminate error.

I wonder if other w2k users are using VBR and hence not seeing this problem.

Hi Graham
Isn't technology wonderfully frustrating!!
Hey, I wish that was an answer. All I want is a logical explanation. Then perhaps I can move on to
