Yeah I read the review Geoff, and also noted that mistake!

The glaring thing for me though was more the fact that they totally missed out on portraying that Vegas is no longer being seriously developed on the audio side by Sony. So, for an audio newbie, it'd be a pretty poor investment I think.

More significantly, they didn't mention Vegas' serious mixing and routing shortcomings, which have lately for me made the app increasingly difficult to work with for complex projects. The only real shortcomings they discussed was the lack of MIDI, not even mentioning ReWire. They missed a lot of tricks.

You know, I'm not sure I've ever read a negative review in Sound on Sound...

Audio doesn't seem to be totally dead.

During a thread on bus routing at the end of November one of the Madison folks did mention that the bus routing was being evaluated and solicited input. I hope those more knowledgeable than I provided some input.

The fact that the audio side of Vegas is a key differentiator in reviews and comments is probably not lost on SMS so it would seem to be in the best interest of SMS to continue enhancing the audio side of Vegas.

Yes, one one think so. However, if you look at the new "audio features" in 7, in my view there are only 2 items that are not directly aimed at enhancing video users' audio needs: Trazport control and improved VST plugin handling. I upgraded to 7 only because DVD-A was included and was a good buy. At the time I was negotiating a potential surround project but that didn't work out so I haven't even bothered to install Vegas 7. I'm still using 6 but have been getting some weird random lockups lately so maybe I'll check it out to see if its a fix. If not, Its time to move on to something else for me. I don't think that SMS could be any clearer about their plans for Vegas and it certainly isn't oriented toward meeting audio users needs or requests.

I sincerely hope that they do get enthusiastic about the audio side again. After all, even video projects need all the audio bells and whistles possible.

The review also failed to point out a feature that (AFAIK) is a stand-out for Vegas - the ability to mix media of 'whatever' filetype and spec onb the timeline, and preview it in real time.

Ben, I've seen pleanty of reviews in SOS saying that things could be done better, weren't as good as they should be, indifferent design or manufacturering, features missing that shouldn't be, etc. IMO it's one of the few magazines that does publish 'real' reviews.

Also often you can interpret a review by what ISN'T said.
