V8 Demo - No sound from Sony CAM

OK, I have posted this issue previously in relation to Vegas 5 (my current version). See the link here...

Basically, using a brand new Sony hard disk camcorder - the DCR-SR52, which sits on it's USB cradle and copies video files to the PC over USB2, the files have no sound when dragged onto the Vegas timeline.

As I said, this happens on 5.0d and now also on the VP8 demo.

Is this something to do with AC3 not working in the demo? I have seen posts referring to this. I don't really want to pay my $150 to find out - there's little else in VP8 I really need just now.

I'm using a Sony camera, with the Sony software which came with it and Vegas 8 demo. Why would this not work?

Ironically, everything works just fine in Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0, which is my current workaround! I was really hoping the VP8 upgrade would be the answer to my problem here.

I am not an expert but I think your problem is the right Codec.
Are these MPEG-2 files coming from your camera?
I had a similar problem with compressed files coming off a Casio Z750 in MPEG-4 format. What's needed is the right codec. In my case, I have to convert the files via some freeware to an AVI format that works in all versions of Vegas.
If you think this makes sense -- download the following to help diagnose the type of files the SONY CAM is putting out .. Gspot can tell give you a list of codecs installed on your system as well as tell you the type file...this information may generate the final solution with the right codec or conversion necessary to work with Vegas.

I looked up an old post of yours on the properties showing up on the MPEG-2 files.
I don't see a stream for sound......

Can you play these clips in Windows Media Player with sound?
Are you sure the USB transfer is giving you sound?

The files are just copied over the USB from the camera, which is a hard drive model, so there is no capture involved.

The properties shown in that other thread are what Vegas 5.0d shows, and I'm told it can't handle AC3, which is why it shows no audio stream.

The Sony Handycam software plays the clips with Audio, and so does Adobe Premier Elements, so I know the audio is there.

I was kinda hoping someone could confirm that the VP8 demo can't handle AC3 but the full product can. I want to get the upgrade at the reduced price but need to know VP8 will work with my new camera, as well as my trusty old MiniDV cam - which by the way produces a much higher quality result.
