V8 Render Issues

I dont frequent these forums much, so please forgive if the questions have been asked before.

I have 2 render related issues with the new V8.

1. I edited a 15 minute Mini DV video last night. Rendered it with the same settings as i used in V6. No fancy effects or anything. Just 6 or 7 crossfade edits. It took 2 hours and 49 minutes to render! V6 would have done it in about 30-40 minutes...easy.

2. A video i DID edit and render in V6 had to be repaired, I just fixed a strange crossfade. I did the repair in V8. The LENGTH of the finished video is the exact same amount. Again used same render settings as V6. Here is what i got.

V6 render = 1,314,171KB
V8 render = 4,290,586KB

Whats going on here?

DV takes about +-12 Gbytes/hour if I remember well, so 4 gbytes seems reasonable for 15 minutes, but 1 gbyte seems very odd. Are you sure you have rendered dv in Vegas 6 ?

Sorry, i was not specific enough.

These are 2 seperate and different videos. The 15 minute render size was not an issue, but the fact it took almost 3 hours to render 15 minutes video IS.

The other issue is that a Video that was rendered in V6 that was 1.5 gig, renders almost twice the size in V8 with NO changes other than a single crossfade change.

A. Should a 15 minute MiniDV render take almost 3 hours.

B. Same video rendered in 2 different versions of Vegas should be the same size, right?

A. did you use 8 or 32 bit ? To which file format/codec did you render ?

B. It should be the same size. How long was this video ? To which file format/codec did you render ?

A. Good Question, i dont know. I was unaware that i could change these. Seems obvious, but i am an Audio Nuendo guy. So i view Vegas more as a Video machine than MTR like nuendo. Where would i change these settings?

B. Video was 1hour and 32 minutes long, and Media player shows that the 2 different renders are the exact same length. How do i see what Codec i was using in V6, so i can mirror that setting in V8 ?

THe render GUI i set it at Main Concept MPG2, with the DVD NTSC settings, but are there others i need to be futzing with too?

Thanks a zillion for your help.

Ah, MPEG is a variable bitrate format. If you render to, say, 9Mbps in MPEG then that file will be 3 times as large as an MPEG rendered at 3Mbps. The file size is determined by the duration and the bitrate. If you use a different bitrate you'll get a different size file.

A. This can be changed in project properties

B. I think this has already been explained by Chienworks. If you want a complete overview on mpeg settings http://dvd-hq.info/Compression.html has some info. These infos are for tmpgenc but most of them are as well valid for other mpeg encoders.

Please educate this dummy as to the quality difference between 9 and 3.

Will i see it? Much?

3Mpbs only uses about 1/3 as much data to store the video, and therefore should look roughly 1/3 as good. More bits = better, most of the time.
