V8's m2t don't open in VMS 8.0??

This is very frustrating.
I captured 3 HDV tapes for film student who'se using VMS. This should have been a piece of cake. He gets back home to discover that VMS Platinum Edition V8.0 will not open the files, says "Unsupported format" or some such rubbish. I did check and it has a HDV 1440x1080 50i template before I went off on this fools errand.

Needless to say he is not very impressed with this Vegas stuff.

Anyone got any clues on this?

Bob.

Frustrating yes but also by design. Sony has always supported a newer or better bath but never and older or cheaper path. I don't agree with it but my understanding is that's always the way its been.

Sorry

We're not talking about a project file here, just a video file!

I'm mean, come on. My V8 captured m2t files open in CS3, apparently they can be easily coaxed into opening in FCP with a simple rewrap and we've run them through a free converter (mpegslipstream) and opened them in FCP, I've seen that work first hand.
The only hope is this student hasn't kept his copy of VMS upto date. I've sent him off to download the latest update to VMS 8.0, hopefully that'll fix the issue for him. If not I'll have to spend more unpaid hours converting his HDV to SD AVIs.

I agree totally Bob - source footage is source footage, and if it's captured using SCS software it should be available to any of their NLEs - hopefully this will be how it turns out ...

I would say that this (or something like it) is more the problem. I don't have VMS but I have quite a few other programs and they all open V8 captured material with no issues.

I just copied 2 HDV m2t files, captured in Vegas 7 I think, to my VMS6 Platinum machine and they both open fine.
It sounds like he has a problem wth his VMS install.
I would be surprised if what you have experienced is normal.

Thanks Malcolm,
that's the input I needed. I convinced another client to buy VMS and we swapped a few media files without problems but I can't recall if any of them were m2ts. One problem down.
Now I'm just hoping another client's G4 will open my AVI files in FCS without throwing a hissy fit. Gotta recommend Macdrive, working a treat so far.

Wait a minute... are we talking m2t files or m2tS files? There is a difference. I don't know a whole lot about VMS but I do know that there are different versions and some wont work with m2ts files

Sorry that should have read m2t s as in the plural form of m2t.

Yeah... that dam "s" really confuses things. They could have chosen a 'p' or a 'w' but oh no... it had to be an 's'
