value/cost/upgrade?

Hi!

I used to be a dedicated user of Sonic Foundry products, but it took so long for SF to support 24 bit that I eventually gave up and moved on. When Sonic Foundry finally did upgrade Sound Forge and I tried to buy it I was told that I didn't have a legal version of 4.5, even though I had bought 4.5 on the phone directly -from- SF, and have been a legal owner of SF products since the introduction of 3, and a beta tester for all of the great SF products and plugs, including Vegas, Acid, SFX 1,2, &3; CDA, Acoustic Mirror, and some products that never saw the light of day.

But I always continued to use CDA. I was one of the original beta testers of CDA back before the product was introduced, and I continued to recommend and use it until I moved away from Windows 98, back in 1998 or 99. I still recommend it and have lamented it's loss in print ever since SF stopped supporting it.

So I have a couple of questions.

Is CDA 5 worth the investment?

Is it as good and solid as the original CDA?

Is there an upgrade path for owners of the previous version of CDA?

Thanks,

Bill

Maybe I shouldn't reply to this yet, as I've come here to ask other users if they've had audio clipping error messages like I've been getting...

I'm like you, though: I almost shouted for joy when I saw a new CDA announced. I kept my old PC for no other reason than because its CDR drive was supported by CDA. I can't speak to your problem about the SF upgrade, but when I ordered the new CDA they didn't even ask for proof I had the old version -- possibly a general intro price, but I didn't inquire.

But as to using it, I've been getting errors left and right except when I don't do any crossfading: I have to leave the 2-second gap in, basically just as it does when you add to the audio pool, in order not to get errs. (I've also had problems burning, but my CDR drive needs a firmware update so I won't get into that.) Since I *love* crossfades and segues -- anything except a silent gap -- these clipping errs are disturbing...

..and scary..I downloaded the demo per an SF tech, and found it compatible with my sony 161040 burner, etc., and given, it is a "new" prod, but I haven't gotten it yet, and there seems to be plenty to rant and rave about it already from folks...! guess I won't be takin VV3 off my compute just yet...

I too was a faithful CDA4 user. Just installed CDA5 today as well as a new plexwriter. I figured on a day full of frustration but was pleased that getting this running went without a hitch. For years, I've never used anything but CDA and after making a couple bad burns due to burn speed, it works flawlessly. I've not had time to get to the nuts and bolts but for the cost of a 100 buck upgrade, I'd say this thing rocks. Some have said they'd like more of a complete combination product but I couldn't be happier.

Sorry Bill, yes the upgrade path. If you have CDA4, 5 is 99.95.
