VARIATIONS IN SIZE OF MPG1 FILES

I am doing a 4-chapter project in DVD Architect. I first did it in Mpg2 and could only get three of the events to go on one DVD. I then re-did the 4 events in Mpg1 and when I looked in preferences, I found that they were approx. HALF the size of the Mpg2 files. So started to build a new DVD burn and when I entered my four Mpg1 files, I found that they were TWICE THE SIZE they were in the preferences information. I was able to get them on the DVD by reducin the bitrate, but I'm puzzled why the increased in size once I got them into the DVD program. Any ideas?

They were re-encoded from MPEG1 back to MPEG2. Stick with MPEG2 from the beginning - just lower the bitrate while encoding until they fit. OR use the AVIs in DVDA and let DVDA encode the file. You can then adjust the bitrate in DVDA.

Thanks for the info. I had orginally put Mpg2 files into DVDA and tried to lower the bitrate, but it only lowered about 1 MB from the top to the bottom of the scale. I thought this was a bit unusual. When I put in the events at Mpg1, I could lower the bitrate and it lowered the Mpg1 files all the way to zero. I ended up with a 4.9 bitrate for the 4 Mpg1 files. My Mpg2 files amounted to something like 8.9 MB and I could not get that into a 3.9 MB DVD and couls not lower the bitrate past 7.9 MB, even when I went all the way down to zero. I hope this isn't to confusing, but it is confusing me.

Bear in mind that the mpg2 file doesn't include the audio. One way to fit a bit more video is to encode the audio as AC3 stereo.

Is there anyplace I can go to learn these things about Mpg1 & 2. I don't think they are in the manual.
