Various newbie questions

Tried looking but haven't found complete answers for the following:

1) What is 24p and 2:3 pulldown?

2) Is AC3 audio available for VMS and DVDAS? If not, any news on a future add-in? The PCM audio files are humongous and limiting movie content.

3) The only place that I have found to adjust bitrate is when preparing the DVD in Architect, and even then I don't get much relief on mpeg filesize. Any other place to do it? Too many times I've rendered video/audio in VMS to find it won't fit on the DVD. Adjusting the bitrate for the mpeg in Architect only seemed to get a few percentage points of space.

4) In DVDAS, when setting in & out points to an mpeg, will they be right on frame as seen on my computer or is the possibility of flash frames possible because of GOP?

Excellent question, Hoosier, and I can only help you with one, and I'm not sure how complete it is.

24p is a process of simulating film speed, which is 24 frames per second). This is how film is dubbed to video. The process of converting 24 fps to 29.97 is called 2:3 pulldown, and here's the dictionary definition:

The process of converting 24-frame-per-second film to video by repeating one film frame as three fields, then the next film frame as two fields.

24p means 24 frames per second, Progressive scan.

Normal NTSC video is 29.97 frames per second Interlaced scan. PAL is 25 Frames per second.

2:3 pulldown what happens when you convert 24fps to 29.97 fps.
