Vector mask playback rate

We have made some vector masks from some still pics that we are using in a project. The problem is the playback rate - especially if we have more than one playing at a time - the playback is so slow that editing and seeing the results of the edit - is very difficult.

Is this a function of Vegas? Our machine? Combination?
Is there something we can do to solve this problem?
Thanks to the help we have gotten on each question we have posted.

Highlight a short section that you want to see better and press Ctrl-B to prerender it to RAM. Now try previewing. Better?

This is pretty much standard NLE operation. The more work you make the computer do, the less rapidly it can do it.

How do you highlight?
When we click on the clips to highlight, and then hit Control B - it asks "how many time do you want to paste?"

That should be Shift+B.
Double-click the clip to highlight it.

Unless the Bezier masks are animated it'd probably go better if you did the cut out in an image editing program such as Photoshop and saved them as .png files with an alpha channel.

Thing is Vegas is calculating the complex masks every frame which is rather CPU intensive.
