Veg File Not A Supported Format?

I have a feeling the hard drive my files are on is the culprit. I'll just put that out there first.

Here is the issue:

After some time pasess if I attempt to open vegas and start the last project I was working on, I will get a message stating that the file is not a supported format and it will show me the path and file name ending in .veg.

Now, if I go back and restart the computer, all is well and I can work to my hearts delight. But, if I leave it alone for some time, I lose the ability to access the files in the project (same hard drive). Restart and all is well.

What is more, if I go to the drive in explorer I can view the files and interact with them, I just can't click on the veg file and open it in vegas.

The hard drive is a USB 2.0 external 320gig drive (about 3 months old). I have tried it on 3 pcs and get the same results.

I plan on transferring the files over to a SATA internal drive shortly (when I get another one in) and go from there.

I have never had this issue before and am curious if anyone else has experienced it or knows how to keep it from happening.
