Vegas 1.0a Drop Frame Sync

djacobs wrote on 10/1/1999, 11:59 AM
Now that I've applied the 1.0a update, I can no longer sync
to SMPTE drop frame. The time display turns red and it
says "MTC Input Wrong Format" and is colored red. If I
switch to non-drop 29.97 or non-drop 30 it will sync but is
slightly off in time where I can hear the original and
recorded sound slightly delayed.

I'm using:

Windows NT 4.0 SP5

Winman 4X4/S Midi and Smpte card (using the SMPTE input)

Sony SVO-2100 VCR with the time code output connected to
the PC.

The tape was striped using 29.97 drop frame time code.

The interesting thing is that I saved a project when Vegas
was at 1.0 and I could load it and sync it with the same
tape I'm using now. Since I applied the 1.0a patch, it
looks like it no longer recognizes drop-frame.

If you have any questions, I can be reached at
dajacobs@adobe.com as well as djacobs@davee.com

Thanks,

Dave

If the display turns red, then the wrong format is being sent by the
master. v1.0 had a problem in that it misinterpreted 29.97 Non DROP
for 29.97 D.

Since you say that 29.97 ND and 30 ND both lock to the
incomming source, then your source is generating ND and not Drop.

What did you use to stripe the original?

For clarification of how we implement the different formats, please
read our discussion of SMPTE/MTC at our FAQ sec on this web site.

Being video, I would suspect that the time code is actualy 29.97 ND.
Does the MIDI Man understand 29.97 ND vs 30 ND? If so, you may have
to tell the MIDI Man that it is actually recieving 29.97 ND vs 30 ND
as the MTC tags are exactly the same, but one runs at 29.97 fps and
the other 30 fps.

If you recorded the tracks into vegas with 1.0 and Vegas actually
considered the time code 29.97 D, then syncing with Vegas locked to
29.97 ND would account for the error in playback.

After Peter Haller gave me some offline help, I'm convinced that
Vegas Pro reads the SMPTE (MTC) input correctly. I do seem to have a
problem with either the Winman 4X4/S SMPTE input or it could be the
VCR.

Does anybody else use the Winman 4X4/S midi card?

Thanks for the help, Peter.
