Vegas 10 Trim with Trimmer

I've been using Vegas since 4.0, but I don't know what I'm missing with this trimmer window in Vegas 10. Seems like all I can do is play clips, set markers and loops in the trimmer window... but I don't appear to be able to trim out sections and bring into the main timeline, and I would think that would be the whole purpose? As in I could cut a 10 second clip out of a 20 min file without having to bring the whole thing back into my timeline? Is there a way I can split, cut, or actually trim in this window?

Yes. I was doing exactly that for 5 hours yesterday. I don't understand what your issue is? I've been using Vegas for 8 years now, and apart from some really neat additions to Triimmer, VP10 is working the same adit previously did.

Please explain further.

Grazie

Trimmer seems to be working OK with me in Vegas 10. I identify the In (I) and Out (O) points, hit Tab if I only want Video or Audio and then press A and the selection is added to the Timeline from the cursor.

Sorry, no ideas as to what might be going wrong.

I just tried marking In and Out points in Veg 10 (64) and had a minor issue getting it to work. Using the (i) and (o) keys I was consistently able to set an In point, but it took about 10 tries for the Out point to "take". Setting I/O points by clicking the In/Out tools in the Trimmer window seemed to work consistently.

I personally do not use In/Out points. With other apps I always found them to be far too limiting, and in Vegas they seem even more limiting. As far as I can tell they just create a temporary selection area - the same as clicking and dragging to select.

I much prefer setting Regions and Markers because:
a) You can have as many Regions and Markers as you want in any given clip
b) They can be saved with the media file automatically (Options>Preferences) or manually in the Trimmer window so that they are available for use in other projects
c) They can be named

I mostly use In/Out points to define an area so that I can make it a Region (r). I use Markers (m) to define areas of interest within a Region. And because markers are visible when the clip is placed on the Timeline, it's very easy to time effects, music, etc. to a particular point in the clip.

Fortunately my I and O points seem to be working OK.

I use the Trimmer to edit a clip to the size I want (perhaps several selections from the same Trimmer clip) and add these to the Timeline wherever I want to put them. It's true these are temporary selections in the Trimmer but this way offers more or easier precision than clicking and dragging (using Alt + the left or right arrow gives frame precision).

It's really a matter of personal preference . Many people never use the Trimmer at all and do all their editing on the Timeline. Much will also depend on the programme of work you need to follow for that particular project and what you are trying or have to do on the way.

I wasn't aware of the IN and OUT points to operate the trimmer, but I've tried it a few times now.... but when I hit "A" to add my selected region to the timeline, it takes everything past my in point, and doesn't recognise the out point. Am I doing something wrong?

I just replicated the steps that you described and it worked properly, i.e. I was able to insert just the portion of video between the In and Out points that I marked in the Trimmer.

It did, however, require several attempts to get the Out point to "take" using the (o) key. Perhaps you're hitting the (o) key but the Out point isn't being set? That's the only thing I can think of because you seem to be doing everything right.

I think I got it, just different than I expected... I had to drag my marker to an end point, and then select the out. Just as if I were setting a loop region in the regular timeline (something I never do). I use the marker buttons, it's just not as easy as staking a start and end point, I have to drag it.

I don't think you should have to drag it in this way. Pressing the I and O keys should create a selection in the Trimmer. Use Tab to separate audio from video if you want and then pressing A should put the selection you made in the Trimmer immediately after the cursor in the Timeline. If this isn't happening you may have a bug or, probably more likely, perhaps your keyboard isn't registering as it should (maybe a sticky or dusty key). Can you trey with another keyboard?
