Vegas 11 3D Crashes and Preview Pain

StereoRealist wrote on 1/2/2012, 2:52 PM
I primarily work in 3D and

My system usually Crashes:
-When rendering to a new track (almost always)
-When using new Blue effects (sometimes)
-When I save and close 50% of the time I get 'Vegas Has stopped working' message
-Pretty much every other save or so.

Here's an annoying one:
When using dynamic ram preview...and I have all the ram a man could want, by the second or third selection that I preview the preview takes forever to accomplish. I found I need to close the program, then start over and it works fast again. I dedicate 18Gb to dyn/ram preview. I’ve tried many combinations and none work better. I also have 3Gb on my nvidia card.
Any ideas about these quirks?

Unfortunately, you don't give enough information about your project settings, system specs, what type of material you are working with, etc, for anyone to help you.

I'm working with dual stream avi files in side-by-side full and have no problems.

Dynamic ram preview seems to work the opposite of what you'd think. I don't have any memory allocated and it previews just fine.

Is GPU acceleration on or off?

There is also a checkbox on the preferences\video tab that says "preview at project settings." make sure that is checked.

You say "card" singular. Are you trying to drive dual monitors with a single card? I've found that to be unstable, but it may be only me. If you are using two monitors on a single card, try a day unplugging one of them, and go back to one monitor and see if your crashes subside. If so, go buy a second card for your second monitor, the *same card as you already have, do not buy two different cards, even from the same manufacturer* and see if that doesn't help.

Best of luck!

Just FYI: here I run a 27 inch and a 24 inch monitor on a single simple GTS 450 card with the 290.53 beta driver - as Windows extended desktop - both via DVI.
No serious troubles with Vegas 511 - and "only" a "stopped working" when playing too much with FX's - max once a week.
I edit full HD AVCHD 1080i and p to full HD Mpeg-2 - with GPU assist ON - but not in 3D.

Thanks Alf. I have only one card...fancy one at that. Maybe not fancy enough though.... I can muscle Vegas into working but all the workarounds seem pretty ridiculous. I edit only 3D. Thanks for yor help, I will try it.

3D changes eveything. Since I don't do much with 2d I can't say if I have any problems there. Anyway, thanks for trying.

Hi,
GPU on. preview on. When using Dynamic Ram it slows to a crwal after I've used it a few times. I save and restart Vegas and it works fine for a whlie. I repeat that cycle over and over
My system specs are in my forum profile. I have two identical systems and both exhibit frequent crashes. Anyway, I'm using AVCHD files from a Panasonic AG 3DA1 (Separate Left and Right SD cads) and a Sony HXR-NX3D1. I render mp4 Side by Side Half @ 2K . I use the 3d sub clip to edit of course. here's the message I get when the system crashes, I'd say 6 crashes per hour.
Thanks for responding.

Have you tried what I indicated in my previous post?

From the Problem Description, it looks suspiciously like what I was getting with a video driver issue.

Also many people seem to be having problems with Build 511. Did you set a Restore Point so you could return to the previous build?

When are you getting the crashes? During rendering or editing? Why are you rendering @ 2k?

Yes, I tried your suggestions. Thanks. I already updated the nvidia driver to the latest. And checked again. I didn't try an earlier Vegas because the crashes happened with those also. The crashes mostly occur during editing. I just used shorthand...I'm rendering @ 1920. I then use a sd or usb to view on 3dTv's. I have developed several workarounds but it makes editing more of a chore. I'm open to suggestions.

"GPU on"

I am doing a lot of 3D editing, MVC footage from either my Sony TD10 but also from the Panasonic Z10000. Using an i7 2600K overclocked, my experience is that it is better to disable GPU for the preview.

It may depends on your graphic card - I use nvidia 3D vision and a 120 Hz monitor, what needs a Quadro - and I use the Quadro 2000D, what is really weak in terms of cuda. But even with a Geforce GTX 570 cuda was weakter compared with the CPU only.

But in the end I have to agree - there is an stability issue with Vegas 11 for 3D. For build 426 it tends to crash on a regular base. Have not tested 3D a lot with 511, due to the keyframe bug.

Thanks Wolfgang. I've created a work around work flow that...works. But requires excessive saves and much hard swallowing. It does drain the creativity out of sony creative. My system shoukd be more than capable, and I have 2 idendical systems designed around the sony requirements...but hot roded to exceed there specs all to no avail. I'll try turning the gpu off as one of my work arounds. I even tried creating a new account which was suggested in another post. No good. Anyway, thanks for letting me into your brain for a while.
