Nobody using swf? Anyone using it with no issues?

The Vegas Pro SWF file import support is meant for text SWF only and supports only a certain flash file version (not sure - I think it works up to flash version 4).

Look around the forum. This question came up in the last two months and I don't remember if the poster had to copy a dll from Vegas 11 or if vp12 included it.

As Marco says, Vegas supports swfs for a fairly old Flash player. You can still export swfs for that player in current versions of Flash. Vegas supports text and vector animation (boxes, circles, triangles, basic animation) in Flash files, but not programmed behaviors.

<edit>Okay, I had to go hunt down MPC-BE to find out what that jumble of anonymous letters stood for. It's a video player.

Vegas' support for SWF has nothing to do with movies embedded in SWF files. It's all about playing vector objects. A really useful feature, but maybe not what you want.

The normal and best way to handle movies in Flash is for the SWF file (the player) to load a separate movie file. In modern terms it'd be an mpeg4 file but prior to that it was files tagged with an FLV extension. You can often transcode an FLV into an MP4 with Handbrake. I'm not sure what you'd use to transcode a SWF with embedded video into something useful.

Hi Rob, I'm trying to update a project I worked on 2 years ago. At that time using Windows XP 32 bit everything worked. Now I'm using Windows 7 64 bit and Vegas won't open the files. I used Swish to make the original file and opened that up and exported it as an avi file but Vegas wouldn't open that either. Is this trouble because Vegas is now 64 bit only? Or perhaps because the operating system is 64 bit or both? The swf doesn't have embedded video and it just vector graphics. As I mentioned the file plays fine in a video player as does the newly exported avi.

I've searched the forum backwards for the last 6 months and haven't found anything to help me sort out why Vegas 12 won't play my swf files. A lot of my old projects used swf files so I really need to get this fixed. Any ideas?

From memory, Vegas supports up to .swf 5 format files, but not more recent versions of swf.

Perhaps check using Swish that you have swf version 5 and not later??

Hi Duncan,

Thanks, but that is not the problem. The files worked with Vegas 10 and 11 when I was using WIndows XP 32 bit. Now I have Vegas 12 on Windows 7 64 bit. Only Vegas seems to have trouble with the files.

Sorry, Kit, I hadn't had time to get to a computer and try things until today.

True, VP12 b394 isn't supporting SWF files as shipped. Confirmed. So I opened up the VP11 program folder, browsed into the "FileIO Plug-Ins" folder, and copied the "swfplug" folder from VP11 to VP12.

After that, SWF files work in Vegas 12.

I don't know if you need the SWFPlug folder from 64-bit Vegas. That's what I had available so that's what I used.

Rob, your intelligent activity begs the questions: Why isn't this happening on install? Even if I knew what to do, which I didn't, how on earth would I even know to do it?

Very odd.....

Thanks Rob,

So just to confirm, I need to install Vegas 11 and copy the swfplug folder from Vegas 11 64 bit to Vegas 12. Is it possible to install Vegas 11 after installing Vegas 12. Will I need to uninstall Vegas 12 first. What a nuisance but if I can get swf back it will be worth it. Thanks again.

Kit and Grazie,

The last I'd read on some other forum which may or may not have been under NDA, the omission of the swfplug seemed to be an oversight. At least that was the way I understood it. You shouldn't need to be pulling the it from an old version of Vegas, it ought to be in the current package.

That said, maybe there's some reason SCS isn't shipping it. I'm sure if you send them a tech support question they'll...oh, never mind.

Otherwise, no, you wouldn't know how to get around it except by asking on a forum or using Google. Since there's evidently not a huge number of people using this feature there probably aren't a huge number of people to answer the question.

In the mean time, yes, you'd have to have another installation of an older version of Vegas. With that you'd be able to copy the swfplug folder to Vegas 12. And, yes, you can install Vegas 11 while Vegas12 is already installed. The only catch I know of is that your installations are being counted and eventually SCS won't let you register the installation unless you call them or ask nicely of their tech support.

I don't know if the SWFPlug has seen any development in the last 6 years. Maybe you can copy it from any old installation of Vegas. You might give that a try first if it's more convenient.
