Vegas 12 mov or 3gp file issue

Found something interesting yet annoying with Vegas 12. Working on a project that includes .3gp video from a droid phone. Vegas 11 imports these with no issues. Vegas 12 will not, complaining that the Quicktime software is not up to date with a link to Apple to do so. Updated to the latest and greatest Quicktime software, Vegas 12 still doesn't like it. Found that this includes .mov files as well.

Reading a little closer, the message says that Quicktime 'authoring' software must be installed. Which is Quicktime Pro, which you must buy. So, this little project is being edited in Vegas 11.

I'm wondering why you need Quicktime Pro with V12 and not with V11.

No, Quicktime authoring tools have always been part of the standard free download. Your problem is something else.

Sounds like it. Haven't figured it out yet though. But here is what I do know:

Uninstalled QuickTime. Vegas 11 then gets the same error as Vegas 12 and can't import .mov files.

Re-installed Quicktime (latest version from Apple website), Vegas 11 now can import files as before. Vegas 12 will not import them, saying it's not installed.

Not making much sense at this point.

Try installing a previous Quicktime version than "the latest." This news comes not exactly as a surprise.

For anyone who happens to run into this or is about to install Vegas 12. Be sure to go into the vegas120.exe file and click the 'run as administrator' check box under compatibility. That darn box got me again... :/

All is ok now.

I tried all of the above, nothing worked. I was having the same problem with SVP 13 producing Quicktime Error. SVP 13 wouldn't import any .mov files.

Spent a good part of a day trying to solve the problem. Change administrator permissions. Removed and re-installed Quicktime. Same result. Finally, decided to attack the problem by looking at the problem from the QT side. I deduced that the problem was QT. I uninstalled QT and in its place I installed Quicktime Alternative. Free and available here:

End of problem! Whew!
