Vegas 14 - changing in & out points without moving clips on timeline

I am new to Vegas so I may be missing something very simple. I record audio and video of a local choir using two or more stationary cameras and one hand-held for close-ups. In the past I used kdenlive on Linux for editing. I dropped the sound track into the editor, then the stationary camera's video on their own tracks, and then the hand-held camera video on the top track. All of these clips were synced to the audio and would not be moved after that. Close-up footage recordings began before and ended after the actual desired clip. I would be able to move both the start and and end points without losing sync to the audio. The clip would remain stationary, but we change how far into the clip we start or end.

I find that with Vegas, if I move the start and end points of the clip, the clip's content follows and we lose sync with audio. Is there a way to adjust these points without losing sync? I did go through all the logical options but was unable to find a solution.

any help would be appreciated.

Hold down on the shift key while moving the start or end point of the video? I usually get my audio synced with the video and group it all together first if I'm using multiple audio tracks.

Once you have your wild sound in sync with video, you can "group" the tracks together. They will then behave in the same way that camera audio behaves, in other words synced with the video and grouped together for editing. But you do not need to group things to keep them in sync. I often do not. Automatic machinery can screw you up just as easily when you don't understand how things work.

This is one reason not to have long timelines but to work in sections. It's very easy (especially when using ripple edit) to throw things out of sync down the line where you assume you are in sync but you are not. Being aware of the need to keep things in sync and HOW to keep things in sync is part of editing. Working with shorter timeline helps.

I think Vegas has all the tools for using multiple tracks in sync with video. Once you understand them things get easier.

Thank you for your reply Tom! When I tried your suggestion I realized the the software has done what I wanted all along. If I drag the begin or end points with the cursor inside the clip, we see the video scroll past the cursor in the preview pane. When the start or end point is released, the video at the cursor returns to its correct position. I found this confusing, but it is a non-issue. Great idea though about grouping the clips!
