Vegas 16 Crashes - Can I upgrade?

roger-milsap wrote on 11/11/2019, 6:53 AM

It seems like the program wants to crash anytime the Video Preview is held up in some sort of loading, like maybe the video looks to be trying to preview what I've been playing, and it isn't (black or frozen), so in turn I try to play another part of the video, and when I press play, it freezes, until I End Task it. Anyone know what's up? Same thing happens when I do different tricks where I try to play the video, and then skip to another part and press play. Something weird event that happens when the program gets too conjunctive. This happens at least 10 times in my 20 minute videos. Any help? Does Vegas 17 fix all crashing issues with 4k footage? Help!

Welcome on this userforum!
What are the specs of your used hardware?
Processor?
GPU?
Amount of available RAM?
What is your projectsetting( screenshot)?
What is your previewscreen set to (screenshot)?
Do you use Proxies?
In some ways VPro 17 works better with 4K sources and projects.

and render faster if your hardware meets the specs for that version.

This happens on 5-6 different PC's all with similar hardware - some exact same, some older, same issue.

i9-9900k 3.60GHz

GeForce GTX 1070

32GB , (Vegas setting is set at 2000mb)

Preview Screen?: Preview: Full

No Proxies

The way you work with Vegas 16 needs the use of proxies and thus a lower preview. Probably that's the reason for your crashes.

For me in VPro 17 these settings are not needed anymore, maybe you can try out by using the Trial version.

I'm going to try it - working in VPRO 17 trial, and copy-pasting the work I've done into 16, for the final render. Sounds like that might work best for a trial run. Proxies are a tough call, because I think it takes almost a full work day to proxy the amount of footage I work with, and AFK time is spent rendering.. Adding a day of Proxying when it only takes a day to edit the footage is just too much effort.

You may find the trial has a time line limitation for rendering.

And just for clarification, my PC was bought standalone for editing and is able to playback at Best while editing. This error I'm receiving is an odd one-off error I receive. So I don't know if the preview freezing is part of the inevitable crash, but the program does crash indefinitely. Another way to describe the inevitability is simply 'trying to double playback within 20ms of a play', it just crashes. Of course this is usually within the timeline a significant amount, at least a minute, so I would assume most of the caches are full, the program is chugging its hardest, and simply one function of the program is being overloaded with too many requests where it should be cleaning and resurfacing each request before the next is ran - the binary goes kaput.

What type of footage do you edit? Which camera did you use to shoot it? What are the properties of the footage?
