Vegas 18 won't play Vegas 15 projects

Andrew-Stevenson wrote on 12/5/2020, 3:11 PM

I have been having persistent crashes all the time from Vegas 15 when using BCC Title Studio. I have just upgraded to Vegas 18 in the hope it would resolve the issues only to find that Vegas 18 won't play my Vegas 15 project. When I press play, the preview window keeps playing video from random places all over the timeline.

In addition, the original issue of Vegas crashing when I launch BCC Title Studio still continues even in Vegas 18.

What a disappointment. I've spent a massive amount of money over the years on Vegas and BorisFx software and I'm left wondering if these companies actually test their software at all.

To reproduce a BCC Title Studio crash I just do the following:

Launch Vegas

Drag the Horizon Media Generator onto the timeline

Click the clip, and select ‘Media FX…’ from the context menu

From the Plug-in chooser select BCC Title Studio, click ‘Add’ and ‘OK’

In the ‘Media FX’ dialog, under ‘BCC Title Studio’ click ‘Launch UI Window’

‘VEGAS Pro has stopped working’ dialog appears

From the Plug-in chooser select BCC Title Studio, click ‘Add’ and ‘OK’

In the ‘Media FX’ dialog, under ‘BCC Title Studio’ click ‘Launch UI Window’

‘VEGAS Pro has stopped working’ dialog appears

What is the Horizon Media Generator? Can you provide a screen shot?

For "me", using VP18 and Continuum Complete 2021, I have no problem launching BCC Title Studio. I access it either through Event FX on the clip, or dragging from the Video FX or Plugin Manager tabs to the clip I want the title to appear on. And the timeline cursor is on that clip.

Clicking on the "Launch the UI Window" button brings up the UI with the video in the preview window and I can do as I want with Title Studio.

ADDED: Ok, I now understand what you mean by Horizon Media Generator. Go to Media Generator tab, drag the Horizon media to the timeline and then go through the steps....

Same result as before using an asset on the timeline. It works.

Hi Reyfox,

Thank you for your helpful reply.

I upgraded to Vegas 18 because someone in the BorisFx forum had said that launching BCC Title Studio had been working OK for them.

Unfortunately since I have upgraded to Vegas 18 (from 15) I have a whole host of new problems.

When I load my Vegas 15 project into 18 it won't playback correctly. It keeps getting stuck on repeating the same frames over and over again or jumping to random frames from other clips in the timeline, or putting up blank green frames. If I try to render the project (in either 4K or 1080p), it stops because it says it's ran out of memory. This is a 4 minute project of 10 x 4K video clips with one BCC plugin. My Windows task manager says I am using 49% of memory out of 16GB. In my Vegas 15 which I still have installed I can render a project 1 hour long in 4K with no issues!

It occurred to me that maybe this is just a Vegas 15 to 18 project compatibility issue so I tried another test. If I launch Vegas 18 and just drag two 4K clips from my camera and hit 'play', they don't play back properly! I get frames repeating over and over, frames from the second clip being inserted in the preview while the first clip is playing, or blank frame containing nothing but green.

I don't understand how just dragging in 2 clips from a Panasonic camera that work fine in Vegas 15 can screw up so badly in Vegas 18.

Reset VP 18 with control shift on startup? Reinstall? I'm editing VP 15 projects in 18.

Boris Title Studio as I posted above is working for me in VP17 and 18 as per screenshot.

My system specs are my sig, but never had any problems with RAM usage unless the project is big.

I wish I had an answer for you to help solve your frustrating problem. I use Panasonic cameras all the time and never a problem whether the clips are 4K 25/50P or 1080 50P. These are the file formats I work with all the time in Vegas.

Try the reset posted above. I know for me, editing is a necessity because that is what I do. I even have another drive with Win10 installed and only Vegas to test if I have problems on my every day system drive.

I had issues opening vegas movie studio 15 platinum projects in vegas pro 17 (crash right as soon as I try to open any project) and I just had to disable all hardware acceleration and that fixed it.

It does appear that the issue I had with videos not playing correctly in Vegas 18 are down to the hardware acceleration. It works fine in Vegas 15.

They have broken the hardware acceleration for me in Vegas 18. If I turn it off, the videos play fine. In Vegas 15 they play fine with and without hardware acceleration.

Thanks for your reply. For reasons I do not understand, the next day, BCC Title Studio is much improved in both Vegas 15 and Vegas 18. Sometimes I get 'not responding' and long delays but it is no longer crashing. Very strange, as I had re-booted multiple times when I reported the problems.
