Vegas 19 - after update lost license

StaryKaszub wrote on 10/16/2022, 12:10 PM

I'm using Vegas 19, which recently informed me about new upgrade available on-line. The upgrade downloaded without problems and was installed also without problems. When Vegas 19 was restarted it displayed registration dialog and after clicking on Activate and register button gives this "An online connection could not be established. Please make sure your computer is correctly connected to the Internet. A fire wall may also be blocking access" - well I'm pretty sure my computer is connected to the Internet, otherwise how the Vegas 19 would learn about upgrade? I've tried suggested option of resetting Internet options, but this didn't help.

I'm running Windows 11. I'm getting email messages from Vegas team about shiny new version 20, but for sure I'm not going to upgrade to this marvel of software engineering since I don't have Internet connection.

Upgrade means the new Vegas Pro 20, so was it an update or an upgrade?

I was not precise in my last post. I meant updating version 19, not upgrading from version 19 to version 20. This time the updated Vegas 19 cannot activate my license due to lack of Internet connection. I am wondering if uninstalling and reinstalling Vegas 19 will help.

You definitely need an internet connection in order to activate Vegas Pro. Uninstalling and re-installing Vegas Pro will not change the internet connection requirement.

Well, you are absolutely correct - activation requires Internet connection. I'm writing this forum post from the same computer on which Vegas 19 was updated. So how come I have Internet connection when I write the post and don't have Internet connection when Vegas 19 wants to activate license?

Try turning off any Anti-Virus app you may have installed including firewall blocking. If using a VPN, try reverting to your mainstream IP provider. Or try again tomorrow - maybe there is some problem currently with MAGIX's server/s.

@StaryKaszub We are sorry to read your issue. The hint to start VEGAS Pro with admin rights is a good one... but Microsoft created this month some strange updates.

  • KB5018410: This update (from Tuesday) force to use a TLS 1.2 interent connection and even breaks some important tools in Microsoft.

  • "Smart app control" (Win11) protects the start of an application without signing (VP20 Update 1 is the first full signed version). (90% of my tools are not fully signed and would not start)

@StaryKaszub Nevertheless, please contact the VEGAS support.

Same here. I download Vegas update from my project opening and when completed it crashes Vegas. What's going on? Is there a Vegas 19 update for real? The last time this happened to me everyone was surprised and some here were hesitant to believe me. That was yesterday. Right now I'm "downloading" again but am prepared for failure.

"download" of update went fast and I'm getting now Vegas 20. Is this a free update? I am confused because there seems to be no announcement of this sort on this forum....

This is nuts: I watched Vegas download and "install' 20 but all that I see in my files is 19, which I can open and upon opening I get all over again the popup that There is an update for 19 including a list of changes and fixes.

I've been through this once before so I don't trust Vegas this time and will continue working with 19 which I am supposed to not have anymore.

****Here I am again. The mystery continues. I made a screen grab of the fathom There is an update of 19 to prove that I'm not making this stuff up but the screenshot never shows up. It's as if I am photographing a ghost. I actually like 19 and am perfectly happy with my work on it so I'm going back to work and won't bother anyone here anymore (not that anyone is complaining). :) 🚴

According to Vegas support the magix.com and magic.net are sites contacted during program activation, so my computer can communicate with those sites and no router/fire wall/antivirus is blocking access, but still cannot activate Vegas 19.

I downloaded Vegas 20 and tried to activate it with Vegas 19 serial number in order to check if activation will be unsuccessful, but instead of message telling me that I have invalid serial number I got the same error "An online connection could not be established."

Magix claims that Vegas 20 runs on Windows 11 - and yes trail of Vegas 20 runs on Windows 11, but if you purchase serial number, you will not be able to register your product on Windows 11.

Magix support will not help you, because they are completely incompetent - I've got couple of times the same response to different posts during conversation with support - their main advice is to check your router if it is blocking access to magix.com and magix.net sites - as you can see above in my case nothing is blocking access to those sites. Then support goes step by step thought the list presented in the forum post mentioned earlier. Finally, there is dead silence from support.

I've been using Vegas for couple of years and have created and purchased numerous project templates for my family video productions and I hate to see all those efforts wasted because Magix didn't noticed Windows 11 release or is pushing in a strange way toward cloud-based subscription by disallowing desktop product activation.

Anyone out there - do you have any advice?

I do not know why it is not working for you. However, I have VEGAS Pro 20 (and 19 and 18, 17, 16, 15, 14) all running on Windows 11 and all fully activated. So, yes, you can register your product on Windows 11. Why it is not working on your machine, I do not know, but it is NOT a global "Windows 11 issue."

j-v wrote on 11/1/2022, 1:43 PM

@StaryKaszub,
You can try next:
- uninstall Vegas 20
- go to Control Panel/User Account
- make sure your account type is set to adminestrator
- go to your installationfile for Vegas 20 and trough rightclick go to properties
- on its screen make the next settings
- Install Vegas 20 and try again to register

Today I've tried to install Vegas 19 on another computer running Windows 11 Home and got the same message "An online connection could not be established. Please make sure your computer is correctly connected to the Internet. A fire wall may also be blocking access"

This makes me wonder how actually Windows 11 is supported by Magix - do you have to install Magix compatible Windows 11 version? Do you have enable/disable features that are not enabled/disabled by standard Windows 11 installation process? Or maybe Magix supports only clean Windows 11 installation not the update from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

It is really hard to believe that all my computers running Windows 11 have some shortcomings in Windows 11 setup preventing program activation because the Internet connection cannot be established. Also, I don't believe that it is normal practice by software vendor to ask the end user to check if TLS 1.0 and 2.0 are enabled in Internet Options and that the usage of discontinued Internet Explorer browser is mandatory requirement for program registration.

jetdv wrote on 11/2/2022, 12:10 PM

As I said, I have a standard windows 11 installation. Nothing special - just a new machine that came with Windows 11. I installed all the versions of VEGAS I mentioned above. I activated all of them on this machine. I did not have to do anything special in Windows to get it to work. Just install and activate.

Are both of your systems running through a common firewall that could be blocking the communications?

Could be related to this? https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-post-365-downloading-issue--137105/#ca857630

StaryKaszub wrote on 11/2/2022, 12:27 PM

"Just install and activate" - could not agree more. Honestly this was my expectation too. But Magix decided to update Vegas 19 to never build - update installed and refused to activate. The same latest build downloaded from Magix servers installs fine on another computer but cannot activate because Internet connection could not be established. You really think that I have non-standard version of Windows 11? Furthermore, I should spend weeks investigating Windows 11 internal to find out what causes problems for Vegas to establish on-line connection.

jetdv wrote on 11/2/2022, 1:51 PM

@StaryKaszub, I'm not saying your Windows in non-standard, as mine also is not. I'm saying that it's working perfectly fine on Windows 11 for both install and activation so there's something in your system, in your internet connection, in some place between you and Magix that is blocking the connection. Most likely it is a firewall somewhere. Does your router have a built-in firewall that is blocking the communication? Do you have some firewall installed on Windows that is blocking the communication? I, and hundreds/thousands? of other people are activating just fine on Windows 11 so there's definitely something blocking your communication which is why I posted the link above where the person talks about solving the problem by adjusting their firewall.

StaryKaszub wrote on 11/6/2022, 11:28 AM

I finally got my Vegas 19 activated. Vegas support got me going with this issue. And here is how I overcome the "An online connection could not be established. Please make sure your computer is correctly connected to the Internet. A fire wall may also be blocking access" error message that was preventing product activation.

When you see the activation dialog you need to open the hidden dialog controling how Vegas communicates over Internet - press both ALT keys twice in a row and type conf - when done correctly "Internet Options" opens. In that dialog just check "verify HTTPS" - don't change anything else and click OK. Reverify the registration data, because when you typed conf it may get appended to your email or serial number depending on where the keyboard focus happened to be.

Now cross your fingers and click on Activate button - when I did it, I saw this:

https://1drv.ms/u/s!Ag9-CnkuAPzChZdHkE-I7HOt6vKnzA?e=jsDR0z

"Revocation information for the security certificate for this site is not available. Do you want to proceed?"

Security warning referred to magix.com or magix.net site. So, in Windows 11 Microsoft implemented strict security checks or Magix website were lacking security info. Anyway, I clicked on "Yes" button and activation completed without problems.

Victor-McCartney wrote on 3/31/2023, 12:47 PM

I kept getting this same message when trying to activate. It turns out I needed to start Vegas the first time by selecting, Run as Administrator. Then it was able to activate.
