Vegas 2.0 and MOTU 2408 Crash problem!! Please Help!!!

G2Sound wrote on 12/10/2001, 6:01 PM
I just built a new system around a P4 1.7 Ghz processor and the Intel 850i chipset with 512 megs of RDRAM. Using a MOTU 2408 as my interface between my DA-78 HR's, Mackie D8B and my computer. Nearly every time that I arm a track, in Vegas Audio 2.0, to record, the system hangs!! This only happens when I select one of the MOTU ports as my input source for the track (ie. if I select my SoundMax sound card as the input source, no problems). I have tried assigning the MOTU card to different IRQ's, using different PCI slots, reinstalling the drivers, and reinstalling Vegas all to no avail. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!!!!!

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I am running Windows 98se. The only software on the computer is SF Acid Pro 2.0/Sound Forge 5.0e/Vegas Audio 2.0h build 434, the drivers for my AGP graphics card and the drivers for the MOTU PCI-324/2408 and the drivers for a MOTU Midi Timepiece. The funny thing is that when I select one of the inputs from the 2408 as the record source on Sound Forge, it works perfectly. I only get the crash problem with Vegas. It is not a "blue screen" type crash; sometimes the screen goes black, other times the system just hangs, but it never recovers and I have to reset the computer. I hope this will help with the diagnosis. Thanks again!

...and here's some more info to amuse and confuse! If I open Sound Forge, Select a port from the 2408 as my record source, run through a record cycle (I don't have to actually record anything, just run through the cycle) THEN open Vegas and select any of the 2408 ports as an input... it works just fine, everytime. I guess this is sort of like priming the pump so to speak. What's up?!!?

I can only speak for myself.
When I had my P4 1.7 built I had MAJOR problems with Win98se. I wanted to stay with Win98 because of my MOTU gear, at the time 3ea 2408 I/Os and MTPAV.
Sound Forge ran ok
Acid 2.0 was not happy
Acid 3.0 didn't play well either.
Vegas 2.0g had the same problems arming tracks start to record and crash after crash and lockups.
A guy who built our systems asked me to try Win2k sp2 with all the new Win2k MOTU drivers. I was in recording heaven! I did make one change to the system someone please help me out here about installing Win2k,their is a setting and im sorry but I don't remember what exactly its for but I know it has to do with IRQ sharing and it has to be set when installing Win2k. I had problems with Sonar and Reason when my system was 98, Now not one problem.I know this does not help. Maybe someone else has a Win98 system running on a P4 1.7

The setting when installing Win2K was the ACPI setting. I think you have to go into the BIOS and disable ACPI before installing Win2K because the installer will detect ACPI and assume IRQ steering.

Try installing the new WDM drivers for the 2408 in Win98se and checking the box marked something like (support for legacy audio apps) This might help with the crashing. Just installing the WDM drivers might do it as well.

Vegas should support ASIO by now but it doesn't and i do not think it ever will.

Thanks for the ideas guys. It's a releif to know that I'm not the only one having these problems!!!

MacMoney: That actually does help. I didn't even know that MOTU had WDM drivers available. 2k is my OS of choice, was only using 98 because of MOTU. I have now downloaded the drivers and will install Win2k as soon as I get back into the studio next week!! It sounds like we have gone through the same hellish nights of fixing crashes when we should be able to concentrate on creating!!!

Thanks again for the help. I'll give you some love in the liner notes!!!

"Vegas should support ASIO by now but it doesn't and i do not think it ever will."

I think we will see ASIO when Vegas Audio comes out.
I think what they are doing is to make sure that VA3 out performs V2 and V1 when it come to the Audio side of the house. I too am waiting for ASIO or WDM drivers.
We'll see.
