Vegas 21 Pro Crashes Every Few Minutes When Editing

joshua-noesser wrote on 3/20/2024, 12:47 PM

recently updated to windows 11 and Vegas 21. Now I am getting a crash issue that is way to constant. When editing, it will freeze on that image that is displayed. You can still click on tabs and they will open, but if you hit play or try to add any footage, it just crashes. I have noticed this problem increases with the amount on the timeline. For 5.3k 60fps from a go pro 11, it will start doing this around 7 minutes. For the GH6 doing 4k 60fps it starts doing it around 12 minutes of video on the time line. One thing i noticed is that the thumbnails to show on video event will change right before it happens, like they update. I have tried changing the settings for those and it immediately crashes. I have also noticed if i click on the project media, i sometimes get the crash too. I have had vegas way to long, and got used to the crashes every 15-60 minutes on older versions. But this is every few minutes and the software is unusable.

Vegas 21 Pro vs 208
i9-14900k
Z790 Aorus Master x
Nvidia 4080
96GB ram
WIndows 11
everything is fully patched.

If anyone has some setting recommendations, I will take it.

I have contacted support, and been going back and forth for almost a month now and getting nowhere. So any help will be greatly appreciated.

Below is a video of what it looks like, hopefully it works.

Here is some information.

Also noticed i have more problems when the VST seems to stick at 100% for a sconed on the loading screen.

@joshua-noesser I see you have contacted customer support as well. I am looking through the information you provided the support person right now. I will report back to the support rep any findings I see while going through the data.

Hoping for something.

I experienced another issue a little bit ago. After many restarts trying to work, the VST was taking longer and longer to move past the loading screen; but what happened is it got to the point that the application would open and then hang, and I could never move past that point until I restarted the computer.

I couldn't do anything with Vegas (v21,208) yesterday trying to edit GoPro 8x7 format (5312x4648) at 60FPS. It was freezing on loading, rendering proxies, and during editing. However, today when I just loaded a few of the same videos, I had no issues at all with freezes. It may have simply been a corrupt video file that Vegas couldn't handle.

Edit: I had no trouble editing the same files today without any freezes, however, I imported one file at a time instead of a single import. Then again, it may have been a corrupted proxy video. I have proxy creation shut off now and I am editing the raw video without issues.

I am having the same issue on all the projects.

I even did a clean install (Or at least the best I could do with the instructions they gave me from god knows how many years ago), and I still had the same results.

I like to run the above settings above and just render proxies prior editing for smooth preview/timeline performance. Seems to get rid off all the crashing issues.

Instead of importing your video files with a single import, try importing them one at a time and see if your stability improves.

Here's a YouTube clip where I'm shuttling at 3x speed through 5.3K 60fps raw video (not proxies). The preview window is set to Best/Full. I could not edit the same video yesterday, until I loaded each video one at a time. No issues editing today.

I will try that, but the reason I use this software is for the GPU performance. Running without it is horrible.

This seems to be more stable. But right before i made this change i had a full 45 minutes without a crash. But with these settings it seems to be fine, but it sucks in quality when trying to edit. Looks like we have similar specs, and I built this PC to be able to run hard and full res without issues while editing. The fact that they are still have GPU issues after 7 versions, is not a good sign.

Turning off the GPU in the 3 places it's used is really a last resort. Since VP 14 we've gotten GPU decoding, more GPU processing of timeline Fx and fixes to dynamic ram preview to make it work better as a preview buffer. Turning these off kills performance.

I'd start with the media and give VEGAS the constant framerate short GOP AVC (h264) media it likes or use quality intermediate formats like Apple ProRes or MagicYUV.

My guess is the GoPro files are the problem as other users have also reported issues.

So I turned them all off, and now I am getting a lot of artifacts in the middle of the render. The video edit seems stable, but not i can't seem to get a good render out of it. Tried all the different settings. Not sure what is going on.

In the past, it was do a render without GPU and it would fix it. I tried turning the GPU back on and still getting them, just in different spots.

I'd put the settings back to defaults, use non-problematic media (convert and replace files that are giving issues), and try a MagixAVC with Mainconcept render.

@joshua-noesser do you have crashes or hangs? With crashes I mean going to the desktop. Thing is you have a very recent and powerful system (and windows 11 hybrid CPU enhancements), and that may be an issue: check if your CPU does not thermal throttle when running Vegas 21. I had CPU thermal throttling issues in Vegas 21 because the default settings of my latest BIOS was way out of CPU spec (shame on you Gigabyte). I see that you have also a Gigabyte motherboard.

Install the free HWiNFO64 and monitor your CPU temperatures and monitor if thermal throttling occurs.
