Vegas 24 bit recording

grumpeedad wrote on 4/21/2003, 1:47 PM
I have a generic PC, Pentium 4, 2.4mb.,1 gig RAM, Windows XP and a Creative Audigy2 ex sound card. And I'm running Vegas vs. 1.
When I set the properties in Vegas to open projects at 24 bit, 96,000hz. and try to record an audio track I get," The playback device SB Audigy Audio [E800] does not support the current output format." When I change it to 16 bit and 48,000hz., it records fine.
It will let me render to wav. file at 24 bit 96,000hz.
I've e-mailed Creative and am awaiting a response.
Can I even record at 24 bit? Am I overlooking something?

my guess is that your sound card does not support that high of resolution. i am not too familiar with that card, but i do knot that it is a consumer level sound card. lower your sample rate to 44.1k.

That's a possibility, but they hyped the card to record at 24bit and 96,000. If you use the software recorder that comes with the bundle it will record at 24bit, but it's not a multi-tract recorder.
Thanks for the feedback

There is a bunch of posts kicking around about audigy cards. Do a search and you may find more info. I believe audigy cards prefer to run at 48k, but do the search.

There's absolutely no telling what will work and not on Creative cards, they simply suck too much.

I would recommend you to get the latest drivers from their webpage, though. They might have shipped your card with old drivers that only support 48 kHz recording.

Much talk on this exact subject in this recent thread.

... and yes - SB cards prefer 48 KHz; any other rate will get resampled in software back to 48 KHz - a needless process which inevitably causes problems. Been there, done that (ditched it!)

Thanks, everyone.
I built this PC myself, so it just wouldn't be mine it if I didn't have something to kick myself about. Ha!
My 13 year old son wanted this card for gaming anyway. :)

That is a perfect application for that card, grumpeedad! Make him happy, then go get yourself something nice... there's a zillion threads in here regarding that, too (what sound card to get), so happy hunting.

:)

keep the SB for games, and buy an M-audio Delta or something for audio. You'll be well rewarded.

I am fairly certain that Audigy will PLAYBACK at 24 bit, but not record.

You did say Vegas v1.0, didn't ya? It's been a few years since I ran v1.0, but I'm pretty certain v1.0 is not supported in Windows XP...I believe XP was only a twinkle in Bill Gates eyes, when Vegas Pro v1.0 was released. I'm actually, even suprised that v1.0 offered 24bit/96Khz support....it's been awhile and I know I've never used it, so it might be there.

Thanks,
It looks like it'll playback and even render to 24/96. But it will only record through this silly little Creative recorder (which looks just like a skin to me) at 24.
I've been using vs.1 with XP for about a year without any problems. I was using a Soundblaster live card which was OK. But they hooked me with the Audigy 2 hype and I swallowed it hook, line and sinker.
When I hit the lotto I'll be able to get all the right parts, but until then I'll be using vs.1 of one thing and vs.12 of another.
But since I just finished building my own PC for this stuff, I think it's more the thrill of the chase than the kill.

The Audigy 2 platinum ex will record at 24/96 in up to 6 channels at once. However you need Vegas 4 or Acid Pro 4.0 to record at 24/96. You need Support for ASIO 2.0 drivers. Playback is either at 96K or 48K depending on the recording. Other sample rates are converted to either 48k or 96K. This is a problem for some who want to output what they created through the digital interface at the sample rate of the original file or recording if not at 48k or 96K. Otherwise the board works very well for me. Playback on my all Meridian system is pro quality. Even after down sampling and bit depth reduction with noise shaping to 44.1K/16bit. Then burn to a CD.

Thanks,
I'll be upgrading my Vegas within the next month or so.

I had to do some searchin on the net, to refresh my memory....but to my amazement. Vegas Pro v1.0 does support 24/96K recording. So if Vegas Pro v1.0 is all you need, it "should" be able to access your sound cards 24/96 abilities. I highly recommend Vegas 4.0 though, especially if you're on XP.
zemlin wrote on 4/25/2003, 10:08 PM
Sorry - I did not see that little "2" after your audigy. That one IS supposed to record at 24 bit. Beyond that, you'll need to rely on the other folks here. I don't know nuthin' more.
grumpeedad wrote on 4/25/2003, 10:40 PM
Yeah,
That's what they hype. So far, I been able to record 1 track at 24/96 through their little "skin" recorder, but that won't help me multi-track. It looks like the hype for 24/96 is to record off a CD player onto disc or something.
I blame myself for not checking this forum (or other forums) before the purchase. I should have, but I looked only at the reviews for what the card was mostly regarded to be good at(gaming, surround). I feel Creative has not lived up to the hype and have not replied to an e-mail I sent them 3 days ago.
But finding out about this forum and all the help that has been offered has been much more useful.
Thanks

FWIW, Vegas 4.0b has been great for multitrack recording so far. I had 2.0h for a while and didn't see enough in 3.0 to justify an upgrade. 4.0b with ASIO and monitoring with effects makes it a HUGE upgrade, plus from what others said above, it will solve your audigy2 bit depth issue.
