Hello Sonic Foundry. I know that Vegas Video 4.0 is in the works, and I would like to make some feature requests/suggestions:
1. For the View Menu items (Ie Alt+8 Preview window, etc), make the keyboard shortcut toggle the windows on/off. Currently, it only diplays the selected window.
2. Add customiziable workspaces, as found in Photoshop, Premiere, etc.
3. Have a realtime render status bar above the timeline that shows green for Render Not Needed, and red For Render Needed. Make it so that double clicking a Red Render Needed section will automatically select that region, such as when you doulble click an event. Add a right click context menu for the Red Render needed sections that give you the choices of Ram Preview, Pre-Render, Render to Track, and Render As.
4. Make Pre-Renders more robust, so that they don't disapeear unless that section of video actually changes.
5. The ability to set default Pre-render settings. For instance, if I am working with DV footage, and I always want to pre-render with the same settings, I would like to not have to select a template every time I pre-render. The same would be nice for RAM Preview and Render As. Also, add the ability to set a default naming prefix and convention, so that It's possible to bypass the Save as dialog if possible. For example, I did a test that showed that pre-rendering a crossfade took the same amount of time as rendering the crossfade to a new track. I created a region the duration of the crossfade, and determined that since render tiimes are equivalent, it would be better to render to a new track, since I then don't have to worry about losing a pre-render. I would like to thenbe able to set a default render template, and call my render to new track clips Label_001, where Labe is user defined, and the clips are autonumbered. If my label is called JoesVarietyStore_transition, then Vegas will autonumber the first render as JoesVarietyStore_transition_001, and count up from there. A toggle switch could be set for using the current system, or using autonumbering. Overall, the idea is to eliminate repetitive dialog boxes during the editing workflow.
6. Background rendering, such as in Pinnacle edition.
7. The ability to pause rendering as in AfterEffects. A render queue would also be good, as would network rendering.
8. A timeline update that shows where in the project the rendering is being performed, as in Premiere. This would be good for print to tape, also.
9. Audio out over Firewire for previewing to a monitor.
10. An option to always move a video event's audio to a new audio track right below the video event when moving a video event.
11. Audio automation as seen in XpressDV, and Premiere. It would make audio a lot easier to adjust on the fly, and Vegas really should have this feature, considering its history. Automated Video Faders would also be nice.
12. The ability to set default transitions, crossfades, and fade-ins/fade-outs. Sonar does this.
13. Real Bezier curves or splines on all envelopes.
14. Event envelopes in addition to or instead of track envelopes.
15. Nested Clips
16. Multiple sequences and timelines
17. Make events on seperate tracks snap to each others edges without first double-clicking an event to create a selection boundary.
18. Update User Guide, Quick Start Manual, and Keyboard Command Card with the following two commands:
ESC - Stops the Pre-render operation, cancelling only the current pre-render segment, while preserving the completed pre-renders.
Alt+` - Toggles bottom window displays On/Off, showing only the timeline.
