Vegas 4.0b crashes with TIF

I am using Vegas 4.0b to create a slideshow with music.

I currently have about 50 of 12MB .tif photo files on my PC in the current project timeline.

If I try to add any more .tif files to the timeline, Vegas 4.0b exits out with a dump of the stack and the program counter. Also, Vegas becomes very very slow (moving and clicking the mouse pointer before it crashes).

Am I running out of Virtual Memory? It is set to 2048MB.

I am thinking of converting all .tif files to .jpg to reduce memory utilization, but I would prefer not to.

My system is an Intel P4 2.66GHz, 1GB RAM, running Windows 2000 Pro.

Thanks for any help.

convert them to targa files -- you can convert them to compresed targa also , you should have no problems then.

if you have a space issue - then jpegs set at 100% quality

tif files use the qt reader , targas don't

I just finished a 70 minute project with about 300 photos. (plus video) They are mostly PSD files that are 4-5MB in size. Only a couple of them are JPG. I don't have any Tiffs. I didn't have any problems with that project on a Dual P-III with 512MB Ram.

I find that Vegas works very well with PSD's.

Yeah, if you want max quality and smaller size, resize the tifs to the output resolution of your video.

I had a problem using TIFs early on with 4.0a and it turned out to be related to Quick Time. If you currently have it installed try uninstalling it and then downloading the most recent version of it. I think I had to do a custom install too to make sure certain elements of Quick Time were actually installed. After that I have had no troubles using TIF images when I have needed to use them. SOFO tech support helped me on that. If you search this forum there are instructions in a previous thread.

Even with an update to your QuickTime version, Vegas is still going to work better with PNG, TGA, PSD, JPEG or BMP files, as we handle stills better with these formats. TIFF files are read using QuickTime, which is typically used for video, and does not have the same buffer management as the other "stills" readers, so you're limited to the number of TIFF stills you can use in a project. I recommend using one of the other still image file formats if you need lots of them in a project.

If you use Photoshop, you can set a "batch" command which will convert your files automatically from Tif to Png. This will be a real time saver. You can set the folder for the conversions and everything else you need.

The freeware Irfanview has a quick and easy batch conversion utility, too.
