Vegas 4.0e and ExpressFX Demo

JohnnyRoy wrote on 1/4/2004, 6:28 AM
I just built a new system and decided to install Vegas 4.0e (the 1st Sony version) and now I notice that my ExpressFX that came with VideoFactory (which I installed first) all say that they are DEMO and insert beeps into the audio stream when used in Vegas (they work fine in VideoFactory, BTW). This was not the case when I used SonicFoundry Vegas 4.0d. How do I get these FX out of demo mode or do I have to go back to using Vegas 4.0d?

Have you tried the migration tools that came with Vegas 4.0e? Specifically, you should try the 'Copy Sony Plug-In Licenses from Installed Sonic Foundry Plug-Ins' (or the opposite, I'm never sure which). If that doesn't work, contact customer service--they should be able to help you out.

There were a few transitional hiccups with plug-ins, but (at least in my case) all have been resolved.

Where did you find these migration tools? I can’t find anything in the readme or anywhere else.

They should appear on the prgrams menu after the install under sonic foundry -> utilities - > migration tools.

I can't remember what the express FX did - what do they add that Vegas does not have?

I think that the Express FX are for pre-Vegas 4 and Acid 4 (and the lower scale programs that came out at the same time: VF3 & Acid Music, DJ, etc). I installed them on my work system for use with Acid music 2 but found out they were installed on the computer when I put on Vegas 4.

OK, I didn’t even see that Utilities menu item at first. I tried all the migration tools and nothing worked. The problem is even bigger apparently. My other applications that use DirectX plug-ins don’t see any of the Sony plug-ins and the only Sonic Foundry plug-ins they see are the ExpressFX ones, which are all in DEMO mode. Even some (but not all) of my Sony plug-ins are in demo mode in other applications (like Cubasis VST).

It looks like I’m going to uninstall the Sony versions of Vegas and DVD Architect and reinstall the Sonic Foundry version so that all my applications can use all of my DirectX plugins again.

I did a little more investigation and found that my XFX1 and XFX2 plug-ins are working in other applications but my XFX3 plug-ins are in demo mode. I also went back to my old computer and the XFX3 plug-ins are fine there but my ExpressFX plug-ins are in demo mode also on my old PC as well. I could have sworn that I had used them in other applications before.

I tried a Repair and an Uninstall/Reinstall of Vegas and my XFX3 plug-ins are still in demo mode in other audio applications (funny XFX1 and XFX2 plug-ins are fine). I also checked all the plug-ins after I installed Vegas but before I registered and they all correctly showed as demo mode at that point.

I had a problem like this before with plug-ins not registering properly and the only solution was to uninstall every Sonic Foundry product, delete all directories and registry entries and re-install all products. I guess I’m heading down that path again unless anyone has a less drastic idea.
