Vegas 4.0e takes too long to start up

I had a hard drive crash and had to reinstall all software including Vegas 4.0e. Even with a newer, faster hard drive, Vegas is taking 45 to 60 seconds to start up. I get the splash screen after a couple seconds, and it lasts about 15 seconds, then I get nothing for the next 30-45 seconds before the application is fully opened. Any thoughts or suggestions out there?

12 seconds for me on a "mature" PC with an AMD XP2100 and a 7200rpm drive.

This is for a blank timeline? You might try setting everything to default. I really don't know the cause.

Suggestion: Do a drive image once in a while, so if something catastrophic happens, you can quickly go back to a well-running system (though you lose recent stuff, such as emails, unless you do other backups frequently). I've utterly destroyed my system maybe 20 times over the past 5 years (mostly my fault) and yet I've never had to go back to square one and reload and reconfigure every single thing.

A few things to check:

In the Vegas options menu, disable the splash screen on startup. Just wastes time and pays lawyers fees. Also, disable the option to load the previous project on startup. It is possible that Vegas is looking for something that isn't there.

I would also go to the options that control where the TEMP files are located, and make sure that they are on a fast drive, preferably one other than C:. I don't think this will make a huge difference, but it will help.

In general, when I've had programs suddenly take a long time to load, it was usually due to them looking for something that was no longer there.

Since you've re-installed the disk drive, the other obvious thing to do is look in the Device Manager (Control Panel -> System icon) and make sure DMA is enabled for all your disk drives.

Thanks John. I think it was a problem with a missing file from the media bin. After I got everything sorted out, it now takes about 3 seconds to open.

Yup. Looking for a file that wasn't there. That's why I don't use "load last project on startup."
