Vegas 4 audio preview is acting strange

In Vegas 4 whenever I preview an audio clip in the explorer I seem to be hearing other sound clips for about 1/4 of a second before the selected clip starts playing. The sound changes each time, so it's like one of the previous selections is being emptied from a buffer or something before the new sound is played. But, the sound is too quick to determine exactly which previous item it might have come from. The problem occurs in both manual play or auto play. Occasionaly it sounds like it works normal but that could just be from having a quieter clip being emptied.

I noticed it when I was going through the 1001 sound effects library and kept hearing these loud sounds in the clips of normal everyday sounds. Like 1/4 second of an explosion sound at the start of a drink being poured.

I'm using a:

Tyan Trinity 400 motherboard
SB Live Value sound card
GeForce2 MX-400 video card

Windows XP Pro - SP1
DirectX 9
Windows Media 9

Everything up to date except the Geforce2 drivers which are the second to last WHQL drivers.

Vegas 3 doesn't have the problem.
