Vegas 4 = "Entry Level NLE?" I think not.

Hi,

Just saw a post over on the Cow that refered to a link on Amazon.com where Douglas Spotted Eagle's new Vegas 4 book is available for pre order. The description of the book ends with the line, "Vegas 4 Editing Workshop guides readers to a working knowledge of this powerful, entry-level NLE. Coming June 2003 -- "

I realize there are many hobbiests and enthusiasts using Vegas, but calling it an entry level NLE is way off the mark. Examples of entry level NLEs would be Video Factory, Movie Maker, iMovie, and Storm Edit for example. Lumping Vegas 4 in with that group seems inappropriate. I doubt the author (DSE) worded it that way.

Vegas may not have the name recognition or professional user base as Avid, FCP, or Premiere, but it just seems so wrong to dimish the power of this program by relegating it to "entry level" status. This might be enough to turn someone away before they ever get the opportunity to see it for themselves before they bash it because of something they read.

For those of us who know better, let's get those order in NOW!!

Any thoughts?

Mike

I agree. I saw the same thing and thought exactly what you did. It should read, "easy to use as an entry level NLE and a powerful professional NLE for the experienced user."

or something like that...

better get your amazon editor on the task DSE.

Mike,

First of all, I agree with you that Vegas is not in the class with those budget-priced NLEs you mentioned. When I read that, it also seemed "wrong" to me. I think there should have been a better choice of words than "entry-level NLE".

I personally went through a couple of entry-level NLEs before upgrading to Vegas Video. Now that I look back on it, I would have been better off to start right off with Vegas. The $100 I spent on Pinnacle Studio DV isn't doing me any good. I think hindsight says don't waste your money on the "toy" NLEs and start with a video editor that you can stay with. I don't regret the money I spent on VideoFactory 2.0, but only because I "got it back" when I upgraded to Vegas Video 3.

I am not sure what the better choice of words should be. But somehow we need to convey to people that they can skip the toy editors and start with an affordable editor that they can grow with and stay with. When we were shopping for an outdoor gas grill, I noticed that one of the brands had a slogan something like, "Start with your last gas grill." As it happened, we didn't buy that one, but that slogan did have a message.

"For those of us who know better, let's get those orders in NOW!!"

I'm not so sure about that. Amazon says that availability will be in 4 to 5 weeks, and for some reason (I don't buy that "hard to find" excuse) they are adding on an extra charge to the full list price. Is there some more reasonable source for this book?

Just got to Books a Million or Barnes and Noble. They will order it, perhaps at a discount, depending on your paticular store.

Yeop. I agree completely. Had I known AMAZON would refer to it as an "Entry Level NLE" I would have flipped. I have no idea what moron wrote that, but write a review, even though the book isn't out, and point that out. Or let the folks at CMP know. www.cmpbooks.com is where you can get hold of them.
