Vegas 4 hardlock upon initial opening

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 Notebook:

http://www.dell.com/us/en/dhs/products/model_inspn_inspn_8200.htm

Intel 845 MP chipset
P4 1.8GHz CPU
512 MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9000 Mobility gfx card
Windows XP Pro, all latest patches & updates (including SP1)
No other system problem.
Installed Vegas 4
Prgm installs fine
Prompts reboot.
Launching in demo mode after reboot causes hardlock within a few seconds.
Tried re-downloading (37.2MB fine)
Same thing.
Works fine on my destop machine, but not on my laptop.
This laptop is only a few months old.
Any ideas why V4 is hard-locking my system?
I have to pull the batery and turn off power.
Ctrl-alt-del has no response.

Appreciate any insights.
Using DX8.1 drivers.
Tried v9, but got the same thing.

Any USB dongles on this machine? There's a known issue that we're working on with a hard lock is you have certain third party dongles on your machine.

Are you running any anti virus stuff at the same time? Norton etc etc. Did you install V4 with AVirus enabled?

Thx for the replies.

1. No dongles per se, altho I am using a USB mouse. It's one of those optical puppies.

2. No antivirus installed yet, but I planned to run Norton AV 2003 in the future.

The O/S is as clean as you can get. Nothing but WXP Pro, SP1 and some critical updates.

Good point. I had started to check that earlier, but ATI sends you to Dell. Yes, Dell has 3 new drivers. The latest posted less than a week ago. I'll try those. Thx for the suggestion. I should've checked that.

I'll get back when I know if they solve the problem.

The updated video drivers (dated Feb, 2003)m fix the problem.

Thx for the hint.

I have Norton installed, and have had problems with Vegas errors.

What sort of problems do the antivirus programs usually cause with Vegas?

Alot of times people have the automatic virus check enabled. If you happen to be in the middle of a processor intensive operation and the anti-virus kicks in...
Also having the anti-virus active when installing software is generally not recommended.

Don't you think this information should be in the readme and the faq ???!!!
It just cost me two nights of sleep...
Do you know which usb dongles that are causing this ?
I've got 4 on my system:
Logic, Cubase SX, Reaktor 3 and an iLok...

On my system(s) it's Emagic's XSkey that's causing Vegas not to launch.
This must be fixed ASAP ! I can't run to the machineroom and unplug the XSkey every time I wan't to use Vegas...
