What are you trying to do in the sample project? I've seen it on my disc, but I've never loaded it. To open a project, just use Vegas and use the Open menu to browse to the directory. A Vegas file project will have the format .veg after the file name. Once it's loaded, you can play it back, and the Preview window will show you what the file will look like if you render it.
I'm fairly new at Vegas also, but if you're looking to do some video editing, I've been really impressed with Vegas. It's one of the better user-friendly programs, in my opinion.

In Vegas Video 3 manual, there was a tutorial chapter, but not in Vegas 4...???!!!. If you can download the Vegas Video 3 pdf, the tutorial is very well done and will familiarize you with most of the features of Vegas 4.

I see that, in vegas 3 manual it has tutorial chapter, but not in vegas 4, why? the sample project i doanloaded is for vegas 4, why they include the sample project but no instruction on how to use it.

Nothing on the site for tutorial instruction? I wonder if they are trying to get you to buy a 3rd party book? I would think though, that they would at least include a tutorial somewhere if they put out a sample project. That stinks...

no i can't find tutorial instruction anywhere, not even 3rd party book (for this specific sample). I like to go over the sample project as i normally do where try out a new s/w. I never used advance video editing s/w before but have used pinnacle studio, ulead video ect.. they all come with sample projects (with instructions). and I really love it as I learn faster than just going through 100's pages of manual

I own Vegas, and there's a manual on the CD. It's PDF format, and it's like 321 pages long. It's not as in-depth as I'd hoped, but it's a lot better than the 'Basic' manual that comes with it.

What you downloaded was a ZIP file containing the sample projects.

Here's the easiest way to view them.
Create a new folder on your desktop called "V4 Samples", or whatever else you'd prefer.
Then find the ZIP file you downloaded and extract that to your new folder on your desktop.
After you've extracted the file you'll see various examples listed in the folder.
Just double-clic on any of the Vegas icons and Vegas will open with that particular sample already loaded.
Press "PLAY", and view.

MyST, i see what your saying. Well..I thought it was a complete tutorial project that instructs you how to build it from A-Z like other video editing s/w. for a newbie like me, a ready-made project doesn't tell me that much how it was made. I mean I like to do it myself a complete project with step by step instruction. you know any 3rd party book or website that for a beginer? thanks.

Well this may help...

While not the detailed how-to part of the version three manual SoFo has put up a basic how-to which should help the green as grass newbies. Go to below page, at bottom under #8 click begin now and you see a multi-step video presentation. It just scratches the surface but it answers some of the basic questions.

Maybe one of the SoFo guys can point to a link for the detailed and excellent hands on tutorial INSTRUCTIONS that go with the project files. In version 3 in spanned about 30 pages and I found it very helpful. Shame if they took it out the version 4 manual, if they did. ???

I'd checkout the Vegas Video 2 tutorials to get you started at the webpage above.
After that, there are a couple books and a DVD set to help guide you.
I'm looking to buy the Vegas 4 book by Douglas Spotted Eagle, whenever it becomes available(back-order right now).
A DVD tutorial set is available from www.classondemand.net
However, at a newly increased price of 130USD(versus 100USD a couple weeks ago), it's out of my price range(when you factor in shipping and exchange rate).
There are other sites with other tutorials, but most of those cover topics that are too advanced for a new user.
Get used to working with Vegas first, it's VERY easy in a very short time. Then you can check out the other sites for the more advanced tutorials.
