vegas 4 serial number...Help!!!

bobbysharkk wrote on 12/6/2004, 7:46 AM
I want to buy a used version of vegas 4 on ebay, but this guy is selling the serial number only. Can I get vegas this way or is this a scam. I have the demo version of vegas 5 already on my computer but it is expired. Will that demo version accept this serial number for the vegas 4 selling on ebay? I just want to start ediiting and can't drop 600 dollars right now. Also down the road could this vegas 4 software be updated to 5.0 using this serial number? Thanks for the help here.

Lots of questions ..... whew.

That serial number cannot be used for Vegas 5. It will only work for Vegas 4. You can download Vegas 4 here: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/download/step2.asp?DID=447

You should contact the seller and ask if he is willing to do an official license ownership transfer through SONY. This will make it completely legit, as long as he owns a real license to begin with.

If that serial number has already been used to get the reduced upgrade price for version 5 then it can't be used for that again.

For real official information on the matter contact SONY's customer support.

Monk, so you're advocating getting illegal serial numbers and using software without paying for a license?

If you are talking about auction #7118643262 the seller looks legitimate. He explains that he ordered the download copy of Vegas 4 and so has no “original disks” to send you. He also states that he will fax Sony to transfer his license. He even states that you can use the license to upgrade to Vegas 5. Looking at his history, he’s been an eBay member since 2000 and from his previous auctions he doesn’t seem to be in the pirating business although its hard to tell because eBay doesn’t keep auctions on-line for more that 6 months. (you could always contact some of his previous buyers and ask about his integrity)

If it were me, I would make a bid because there are no red flags that I can see. There is always a chance that he is not legit but that’s true of anyone on eBay. Pictures of shiny boxes and promises of “like new” disks are no indication of legitimate sellers on eBay. Many of the pirates have picture perfect adds. If this is pirated software, eBay will protect your purchase and revoke the sellers ID because its against eBay’s policy to sell pirated goods.

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for your actions. You must make up your own mind. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Uh Mr monk, he sounds like wants a legal number from sony ,not a key generator "genuine"number, actually pay for the software like so many of us do.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like well informed advice. It helps to hear from people who know more about this stuff than I do.

e-mail the guy & tell him he just needs to e-mail sony to get the # changed. It takes then less then a week (did for me).

If I were you, i'd also tell him that (if you win) you want to see an e-mail from sony saying that it's now your SN BEFORE you pay. I read on paypal last night that their money back guarentie (and protections, etc) only cover physical good & not electronic goods (as the s/n). Tell him this & you don't want to get burned (you just want to be safe).

> i'd also tell him that (if you win) you want to see an e-mail from sony saying that it's now your SN BEFORE you pay.

The serial number will NOT be transferred. The LICENSE will be transferred and the serial number will be null and void and a NEW serial number will be issued to you in an email from Sony. So the original seller cannot continue to use the old serial number and he will not know your new serial number.

I doubt you’ll get the transfer to happen before you pay. I know I would not transfer a product to you without getting paid for it first. It goes both ways. At some point, you have to trust people. The fact that he said he would transfer the license to you shows that he understands the procedure and is willing to follow through on it. Worse case (if he doesn’t) you still have a good serial number, its just registered to the wrong person. That means the software will work but you can’t upgrade with it until its in your name.

You also have protection through eBay (not just PayPal). If the auction was misleading and you do not get what you paid for, you have a legitimate complaint for a refund.

I would do a Save As on the auction page and select *.mht format. This will give you a single document with the exact wording of the auction at the time you placed the bid. Seller are allowed to change the wording so this is a good precaution.
