Vegas 4 vs Adobe After Effects 5.5

Can anyone tell me how After Effects 5.5 compares to Vegas 4? Can it be used to complement Vegas 4? I recently took an AE 5.5, one day training class. All of the work we did in this "beginning" course pertained to keyframing, which Vegas does.

The instructor states that AE 5.5 is a great effects program, but he doesn't use Vegas so he couldn't tell me whether or not Vegas has most of the same functionality and/or features.

Maybe you should visit the After Effects site and download the demo and just play around with it to see if it does what you want to do.

Its expensive and comes in two flavors. Obviously most of the "good stuff' comes in the more expensive version. Judging by comments in the forum several people like it/use it. Some features are already supported in Vegas, other applications, other not as well or at all. Personally, I've been wating for Boris Red, also expensive, (very) but should run rings around After Effects...in the areas I'm interested in.

Vegas can do some wonderful fx but it is primarily an NLE---AE is a powerful FX engine----They work together well.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll download the demo and do some testing.

agree with Billy Boy, take a look at www.borisfx.com

Boris Red 3GL will be available soon and can be used as a plugin. It will be the best choice for Vegas IMHO.

Take a look at the video tours to get an idea of what it can do and there is a trial for download.

After Effects is mainly a compositing program and VV is trying to be a lot of things, thusly AE does 'one thing' and does it extremely well. VV can do some of what AE does but is limited in many ways. An actual 'comparison' really isn't fair because AE never claimed to be a DAW or an NLE. Some users of VV feel that it can do anything that AE does but as a user of both IMHO VV is not even close to touching everyhting that AE does. But it really depends on your needs.

VV and AE can work together well because AE is open ended in the sense it can export almost any format you need, up to film res. VV can import most formats now, although really only output a few. One important thing I did find out is that is you are doing any sort of 24P work in AE you will need to re-render it in VV if you wish to do a PTT because currently VV only reads the 24P information from VV rendered 24P files and/or 24P files shot with the DVX100. (To be more clear - VV will open the files but for outputting via firewire in the VV VidCap mod nothing will happen) Also the amount of excellent plug-ins available for AE should be considered. Depending on your budget and your needs AE can do a lot more than VV can. For compisiting and doing effects AE is the place to be, so to speak.

Download the free tryout version from Adobe and see if you like it. As I say if you aren't going to do a lot of title work, compisiting work, effects work than you probably don't have a need for it.

Take a look at the Borris Red "tour" as well.

Both products are very good, really depends what you want to do. I'm leaning towards "Red" since it is suppose to be released as a plug-in, I think it can be/is a free standing application too.
