Vegas 4, We bought it, BUT ....

Still running Vegas 2 that RELIABLY does most everything we need in the studio. Still reading too many horror stories hereabouts that would kill us in a commercial audio production environment

Considering running 4 on my home DAW as a test bed, which is often used to prep projects before taking them to the studio for the real work.

Can the Vegas 2 in the studio open Vegas 4 .veg files? No effects, just trimed up files and some volume and fader moves.

Thanks,

KAC ...

well, if you save as a .txt edit list, you would get edits and placement, but that's it

Have you actually *tried* V4 to see if it works for you ? Mine does.

Not yet. But, we've been using Vegas, and its predecessor, since the very beginning, and the beta before that, and I've learned the hard way ... on income generating software, it's prudent not to fix what ain't broke.

I would really rather test it on a non-critical machine first, thus my questions regarding compatability.

I did hear some things on the back channel from long time participants that aren't all that pretty. We'll see ... ITMT, SF has my money for the upgrade, I just hope my luck is as good as yours. :)

Thanks for the tip, Charles .... that may be all that is necessary in this case.

Why wouldn't you install V4, keep the earlier version on your machine and run some tests or small/non-critical projects to see how it works. I've had versions 3 and 4 on my machine for months and I made the transition slowly to avoid trouble. I didn't switch over completely 'till the first update came out, but now I'm using V4 exclusively with no problems. :)

I am like you...had vegas 2 for a year...flawless. The suggestion to run dual 2/4 is not a workable suggestion. I tried it, and 4 loaded some driver into windows that caused 2 to not do some of the things it had been previously capable of, such as using acoustic mirror as a plugin without glitching.
V4 IS buggy, but it's still cooler than 2 for the FX automation thing, but that's about it.
I used to automate FX by coping tracks and using full FX mix and volume automation to achieve FX automation...i may just go back to version 2.

" it's prudent not to fix what ain't broke."

You still driving a model T ? If you think there are any features you could possibly make use of in V4, you owe it to yourself and yuour bbusiness to at least give it a try on your machine. It can very happily coexist with other versions, so you're not burning any bridges.

Also bear in mind that you generally only hear from people with problems. How many is that on this forum, 10, 20 ? How many copies have been sold ?

Apart from a few very minor glitches (very occasional small clicks on playback, not rendered), My V4b works just fine.
