Vegas 5.0 and DVD Architect and large files

I have a couple 10GB MPEG's that are 1920x1080i with AC3. I would like to get them down to 720x480p and keep the AC3 to put them on a DVD with Architect. My laptop is a HP nc8000 Windows XP SP1, with 1GB of RAM and a 1.5Ghz P4 M. I have the files on a 160GB External FireWire drive. Vegas seems to have a really hard time opening these files so I can render them down. This is one error I got trying to do an Import Media, Error occurred during current operation, An Exception has occurred:

I did get Architect to pull one of the files in and after 11 hours of trying to build my DVD, I had no sound and 2 hours of the first frame of my video. I have tried splitting the MPEG's down into 2GB chunks and it didn't seem to help much. I could see the video in the timeline editor but if I try to render as MPEG2 it gets stuck at frame 129. Even if I did use the smaller size I'm not sure how I would merge them to take the 5 pieces and get them on one DVD with Architect.
Anyone have any thoughts, experiences or steps on what I might be able to do to get this accomplished?

Thanks for any help,

Chad

- If I understood what's happening...Vegas cannot open AC-3 files. Guess this feature would be part of the wishlist for Vegas 6 .

This would probably be a good situation to use one of the DVD Architect templates and render SEPERATE video and audio. If DVDA won't accept the AC-3 files render as WAV and then let DVDA convert them on its own.

But I can't even get Vegas to open the 10GB files to choose a DVDA template. If I use one of the cut 2GB files and choose the DVDA template to do just Video (then I was going to go back and do the AC3) it gets stuck rendering at a few 100 frames. Any thoughts?

So I can "render as" AC-3 but I can't open one...that sounds odd! Please explain...

Ok, let's start from the very beginning: you've said that....
"I have a couple 10GB MPEG's that are 1920x1080i with AC3. I would like to get them down to 720x480p and keep the AC3 to put them on a DVD with Architect."

- I suppose those are MPEG2s. The size is very weird, unless (maybe) those files are in HD format. When you remark "with AC-3", these files must be separate form the MPEG2 ones - hope you know that too (LOL). Resizing those MPEG files with Vegas is very simple: go to project and choose the format DV 720x480 (amongst many others). But the problem may be with your own MPEG files since you insist Vegas cannot open the files. Some time ago I had a problem much like yours with one of my 30 minute long MPEG file and DVDA. DVD Architect was crashing almost at the end of the MPEG file as I was setting some of the last subtitles in Brazilian Portuguese and French. At that time, SONY experts told me I had an "Ill Formed MPEG2". If I'm not mistaken, I solved the problem fixing the so called ill formed MPEG file with TMPGENC DVD Author. How? Well, that's another story (LOL). I dropped the file in TMPGENC, and authored "an only file DVD". I burned a DVD RW and afterwoods I had DVD Decrypt configured to get this VOB file back to my HD as an only file (no splitting). Then with the help of TMPEGENC-Plus Video Encoder, I demuxed (demultiplexed) the file as MPEG2. That let me open the file with DVDA. I don't know if there are easier solutions but that one worked for me at that time. Maybe nowadays I could find an easier or more "professional" solution for the problem. Anyway I would suggest you do the following:

- download both DVDA and Vegas updates (just in case you haven't done that yet);
-you can also post a new thread at www.videohelp.com ; They have fantastic solutions, tutorials and people there - exactly like here - are very friendly. Hope you can give me more details to let me try to help you and please, don't panic. Learning this video "thing" does take time.

Best regards,
Mark

So, just to be clear...

Your files are MPEGs in HD (1080i) with AC3 audio embedded in the MPEG file (ala .vob files)?

Vegas does not edit AC3 files on their own or embedded in video files. Vegas can render to AC3 but cannot read it on the timeline.
