Vegas 5.0 & JVC HD100 HDV

I recently shot a short film using the JVC HD100 in HDV 24p. The trouble is when I tried to import the footage into Vegas 5.0, I got a message that basically said the device could not be found and there was some sort of error. To get my project in on time (Philly 48HFP) I had to cut it on Final Cut. (You can boo here)

I then shot test footage at HDV 30p and HDV 25p and encountered the same problem. My next step involved shooting test footage at DV 24p with the same camera in its DV mode. I had no problems at all and the footage imported correctly.

I read on the Sony Web site that Vegas 7.0 has improved HDV functionality and hoping that If I upgrade, my problem will go away. I'm still reluctant since this could be a hardware issue instead of software.

Has anyone ever used the JVC HD100 and encountered this problem. If so, how did you get around it? Will Vegas 7 be the cure?

Thanks,
Mark K.

I don't remember Vegas v5 having any HDV functionality at all, so v7 would definitely be an improvement. Vegas now has two capture modes, the Vidcap program which is called externally and an internal HDV capture mode. The external Vidcap program will not capture HDV. The internal HDV capture mode was introduced in Vegas v6. I don't have a JVC camera, so I can't speak to whether V7 will specifically work, but if you're going to do any HDV work, Vegas v7 is a must.

Vegas 6 added HDV support, and works with the JVC HD100. Vegas 7 greatly improved the HDV support though.

Vegas 5.0d started HDV templates, but they recommended using Cineform for capture.

Back then, I downloaded CAPDVHS and used that successfully with my FX1.

A more modern capture tool that might work is HDVSplit.

Now, I am using FX1 with NTSC and the above work. Not sure about the 24p JVC.

But yes, you can use V5 for HDV work, get version 5.0d, and I would recommend using Intermediates (Cineform avi) or DV proxies instead of m2t.

This all sound reassuring. Thanks everyone. I'll upgrade to 7e and see what happens.
