All of this is certainly great! However, for me, the lack of rewire or some sort of midi support seems almost unbelievable and will certainly be a deal breaker for many. Although I will do the upgrade to Vegas 5, the lack of midi or rewire literally forces me into another app which I was hoping to avoid. :(

Since rewire and/or midi was very much at the top of the Vegas 5 wish list on the ongoing forum polls, I'm very curious as to why Sony left this out? Acid has rewire so what's the thinking here???

Confused,

Red:

I know you have been vocal about wanting more CDA type features added in Vegas. Any of this happen with Vegas 5?

No, CDA features added that I have noticed. Sony has mentioned this in the past that no more CDA features would be added to Vegas, since CDA is now available again. I was primarily looking for a transport option, like in CDA where you could easily preview CD track ID starts. This is somewhat accomplishable using the "<" and ">" keys already. The primary thing I'm looking for is a CD text feature, which is neither in CDA or Vegas......that's my major disappointment at this time. Especially, if there is ever an update of CD Architect and it will get this feature. This would mean, I would have to take a step back and start using CD Architect again for CD track assembly, just for CD text ability. I'm not sure why this is such a difficult feature for Vegas, since you can already put "Text" on the CD track ID? So to me it doesn't look like it would have to be a big UI change, just a simple "write CD text" option under the CD settings tab.

Take your pick:

They don't listen
They don't care
You (we) don't count
Their focus is video
They don't believe in connectivity
They believe that the modern mode of music production should involve two computers and an external mixer

All kidding aside, it is their prerogative to compile their bits in whichever direction they choose, but ignoring what had to be one of the most requested features -- Rewire -- was not what I would consider a bright move customer-satisfaction wise.

Rednroll, first script I ever made for Vegas 4:

Render your CD layout to one continous file, run the script and burn with Nero or some other .cue-compatible program. The CD Trackmarkers will be the CD Text titles.

The script is limited (and old!), but if there's a need for improvement I'll go over it again.

I think the new features look nice, but didn't expect a $200 upgrade cost. That is certainly going to put me off for a while.
drbam wrote on 4/19/2004, 9:51 AM
Actually the upgrade is $150 till end of May. You should get an email about this (I just received it). If I remember correctly, this upgrade price is consistent with past Vegas upgrades? Considering the added features, I think its quite reasonable but of course, value is subjective is it not? ;-)

Hmm...im going to do the upgrade but im concerned if the timestretching has changed as that will mess up my older projects, does anyone know.

Also i downloaded the feature pdf but i cant find any iinfo on what kind of hardware it supports and i mean like external mixer/control surfaces.

?
zemlin wrote on 4/19/2004, 9:56 AM
I think I paid $150 to go from 2 to 4. $150 "feels" a lot more reasonable than $200. I'm at work so I haven't seen the email. My cash flow will probably be good enough to swing that before the end of may.

My other audio app just announced an update too - so I have two upgrades to buy - damn trade shows.
Arnar wrote on 4/19/2004, 10:02 AM
Hmm i bought the downloadable version but when it took me to the download area , guess what ...no download links?

Hmm ..i cant get the download...dammit
And no confirmation email either, so watch out guys their system is broke.

I got an email that's got $199 for the upgrade in one area of the email and $249 in another area. Both links take me to the $199 upgrade option.

Where are you getting the $150 email? I am registered user of almost all of Sony/Sonic Foundry products (just in case it's a tiered upgrade path).

I haven't received any emails and I am registered for V4 and Acid4. I see $199 on the website, and considering that there is nothing with regard to transfers of any sort between Vegas and Acid - not even Rewire (which would be enough!), I see very little in the new audio feature list that is worth $200 for me.

Hello Everyone --

Um I am little bit lacking in the Vegas arena, however I use it for multitrack recording and mixing -- so I am gonna upgrade since I am fan of Sonic Foundry / Sony

Could some one please elaborate further on the following (I copied and pasted Red's comments)...

(01). Docking windows
(02). Subclips
(03). FX package folders
(04). External surface support
(05). Envelope point thinning
(06). Enhanced Punch-in recording
(07). Auto-input monitoring
(08). Improved time stretching
(09). Event pitch shifting via keyboard
(10). 5.1 audio plug-in support for master bus

Thanks - -It would be helpful to know since I plan on getting it within 30 days.

Bye -
Kevin

"I see very little in the new audio feature list that is worth $200 for me."

On the professional side, the hardware control support along with the realtime automation recording is worth a $200 upgrade price by itself to me. Not to mention, auto-input monitoring and true punch-in ability that a lot of users have been asking for also.
zemlin wrote on 4/19/2004, 11:02 AM
I use Vegas primarily for tracking - the monitoring and punch-in features are the most attractive.
H2000 wrote on 4/19/2004, 11:06 AM
No doubt those are excellent additions! But, for my current work and because I don't own any control surfaces, these features really just don't do much for me. I'm doing more composing and production, and less band/group type recording and mixing. For my puposes, I might have upgraded for Rewire alone!
klyon wrote on 4/19/2004, 11:31 AM
I'm in that boat as well: I would definitely have upgraded for rewire alone. But the old method of punch was/is great and the non-tape machine style input handling didn't cause me any trouble with tracking or overdubbing.
I'm on the road for the next month anyway and can't check it out in detail, but I don't see much in there for me either.
(Bus to bus routing is good, I suppose, but was easily worked around. Oh, and the surround master bus is a good thing. I did a surround mix last month for the Whitney Biennial; it would have been easier with the master bus, but I got around the limitation.)

Arnar,

I sent an e-mail to customer support describing the same situation and was told that they have now caught the error in the automated system. They provided me with a serial number with their response. Try e-mailing support for your serial number.

I just downloaded Vegas 5a from the update page and will install when I'm home from the office.
